Trace got his at 4 months, but by itself. No problems. Also the vet said if he were to have a reaction it'd be within 30 minutes. |

My vet said within 24 hours...and 48 later he didn't want to eat, but the vet said it was impossible that it was due to the shot...all I know was 72 hours later he was back to normal!! |
It really makes me wonder if that's what happened to Benny. He had his first puppy shots on Monday. On Tues. he wasn't eating and seemed to get worse throughout the day. On Wed. he died at the vet office(he was on an IV for dehydration). I really wonder if he would still be alive if the emergency vet (local Belgian vet, not the same vet that gave the shot) would have treated him for an allergic reaction instead of just antibiotics for an illness from the worms. It makes me sad to think that he could have been helped! The vet never asked if he had shots recently, or anything. And we never thought to mention it! An allergic reaction never even crossed my mind until I was reading on YT! We have since found a new local vet, that is WONDERFUL! If only I'd have known!! Brooke PS do you think it's possible that the reaction could take so long? |
I'm not sure. My vet said within 24 hours, and Linus's happened in 1.5 hours, like Kristy said. It could have just been that the vaccinations messed with his little immune system that was already weak from the worms and allowed the worms to run their course more quickly, not giving the antibiotics time to work. I'm no vet but that makes some logical sense to me... |
Daisy got hers 2 days ago at just under 4 months. She seemed to be fine with no reaction. |
Keeley got his rabies shot last Wednesday (almost 4 months old and 4.5 lbs) he did great. He did throw up on the way home, but that is not uncommon for him. He gets carsick easily. Other then a nap when we got home he was his chipper little self. I think you should talk to your vet, and stay close by so if there is a problem they can help you out. Let us know what you decide to do. |
my breeder told me about 8 months and harley is 8 months now and still hasn't had his since his accident. My vet said it really didn't make sense to give the full amount to a little bitty dog and so he would probably lessen the dosage. I talked to someone else who just was not really concerned that he did not have it yet since he's an inside dog. I'm not in a hurry. harley's mom |
Pill given before shots Piper just got his rabies shot on Tuesday along with his other puppy shots. He just turned 4 months old and weighs 3.6 lbs. My vet always gives Piper and my Chi, Pixie, a pill before they receive their shots to stave off any reaction. Pixie had a horrible reaction to a round of puppy vacs. (not rabies)when she was a baby and had to be rushed back to the office and hooked up to an I.V. and given baby Benadryl for days (different vet). SCARED me to DEATH!! We immediately switched vets and this vet says he ALWAYS gives the pill to the little ones before giving them ANY shots. Haven't had any problems with Piper or Pixie with any vaccinations, including the Rabies vacs, (knock on wood) so I think the pill does make a difference. |
Gonna sound dumb here.... i didnt know rabies still existed, they dont do rabies vaccines here, i thought US was the same. sorry if thats dumb :p |
4 months is fine 4 months is fair for giving a rabies shot. However you may request half the regular dosage since there is only one dosage for all dogs and depending on the size of your yorkie you might not need a full dosage |
I hear 6 mths,straight from the Vets mouth :) |

My breeder says that she doesn't give her dogs rabies shots. She said it's been a very very long time since the last epidemic but it is state law or something. She said it's necessary if I'm going to travel with a dog as flights require health certificates. She also said, once you get it, you're on file with the state and the vet and you are required to pay every year (something like that, cant remember clearly). I'm going to put it off until I decide to start taking my dog outside. The breeder didn't do any deworming either. She said her dogs are free of worms and has never been outside. I'm going to take Lucky to a vet to see if anything is wrong today. :) |
