Spaying side effects? Hi All. I am new to this forum and had some questions I hoped someone could answer. I had my 1 1/2 yr old Yorkie spayed last Friday. The vet ended up finding out that she was in heat after he cut her open, but complications have been at a minimum...until now! She is going (if you know what I mean) all over the house! I took her out for a late night walk tonight even, and the SECOND we got back into the house, she went #2! The vet had asked me to keep her on pee pads over the weekend to reduce her energy levels and keep her calm. Now, I'm starting to think that I just reversed all of my hard-working potty training. Is this a common side effect? Also, my dog has never had any separation anxiety...until now! She cries so loud when I leave that the management in my building called me at work 45 mins after I left to tell me that the neighbors are complaining. I had to come home, get her, and drop her off with a friend. Does any of this sound normal? What should I do? I waited as long as I could to get her spayed out of fear that it would change her personality, manners, etc. And now all of that is happening. Any/all comments are appreciated. Thanks! |

sometimes they get a urintary tract infection afterwards..please take her back in and have it checked out..Mine did that once, he put her on antibiotics |
i havent expierenced it yet but will be prob next week i am going to make her appt to get spayed |
Occasionally dogs do get aggressive after spaying (this usually happens in the dogs that showed these tendencies before). I think they could definately get separation anxiety from it but I wouldn't be too worried unless it doesn't go away in the next month or so. As HHA said, if she is peeing more she needs to see a vet. |
Thanks everyone. I called the vet this morning and dropped her off for some tests. The vet thinks I'm being overly cautious (whatever that means). He checked her out and said that he thinks she may have been a little confused since she's been going on the pee pad for the weekend. He also said that maybe she just doesn't like the cold and rather poo inside. haha. I don't know if he's messing with me or if he's serious. Anyways, the advice he gave was to go back to potty-training methods...taking her out every 4 hours, being really watchful of her, not letting her out of sight. As far as the separation anxiety, he said it does sometimes happen to dogs after a traumatic event (ie. spaying). He said that time should allow everything to go back to normal. If she isn't back to normal by the end of the weekend though, I think I may see another vet for their opinion. Thanks again for all the responses! It's nice to have some other Yorkie fans to talk to. |
ellashae, I'm new to this site. I joined a few minutes ago because my yorkie was spayed Thursday and she is doing exactly what yours is doing minus the anxiety. She has peed everywhere since yesterday. She even peed in her fluffy pink bed. I couldn't believe it. She was almost trained and now she's doing worse than ever. I know that she can hold it when she wants though because she won't go in her crate. So I don't know what is going on. |

What happened with Lola? Do you think it was an infection or an attention thing? She is actually on antibiotics because I had them to clean her teeth while she was under because she had tarter. I've only had her since Jan. 9th and she has been doing so good. |
After Lucy was spayed, she would ring the bell to go outside and squat and either nothing happened, or literally 2 drops came out. And she did this constantly. We took her to the vet, they checked her urine and said it was all ok. I really "put the screws to them" and said this is really not right. I felt my dog was "broken" since the spay. She was never doing this before. They did a more advanced sampling of the urine and found a bacterial infection. Is this a UTI? I don't know. They didn't call it that. Put her on antibiotics and she was fine after that. I would encourage you to really push the vet, or find a new one (as I eventually did). You know your dog. I would not accept "confused" as an answer. Teresa |
Kayla was spayed a week ago Friday and she also cried when we put her in her kennel to try to keep her still and calm. She was on pain meds but I did not want her in bed with us because of being afraid of her getting hurt. We finally gave in and let her sleep with us as usual and she was fine. |
Hey tinyt and everyone-- My pup is doing a lot better! I think that maybe dogs just need to get re-acquainted with their bladders after surgery. I feel like maybe she didnt notice the urge to go like she used to. I've gotten surgery before, and I know that it makes a lot of changes with your body, and always takes some time to re-adjust. My advice would be to give it some time. While it MAY be a bladder infection, I would wait it out a couple of days before rushing her back to the vet. I stayed on top of my pup through the week and weekend and she just got back into her regular habits again. Make sure you are taking her out about every 4 hours, since her bladder is probably more sensitive after being handled during surgery...hopefully that will give her more opportunities to go outside and NOT in the house. Hey all, I wish I could say that Tiara is doing better but she's not. She's still peeing where ever she feels like it. I think Tiara may have been in heat also when she was spayed because there was an extra $20 charge on my bill and they told me if she was in heat there would be an extra fee of $20. I have also had surgery and was messed up for a month or so so maybe she will return to normal soon. At least I hope and pray she does. |
Went through that too. For the first few days after I had Bea spayed she completely forgot what the pee pads are for. It's like her brain went on vacation from the drugs or something. Took her almost a week to get back to normal(whatever that is!). |
My pup was in heat also, so don't freak out just yet. It took her about 10 days to get "back to normal." Give it some time and, if possible, spend more time than usual with her. I found that just staying home and cuddling with her has helped her quite a bit. Best of luck to you! |

Wow, I did not know you could even get your dog spayed when she was in heat. I thought you had to wait until she was out of heat.:confused: |
Apparently you can. I told the girl at the vets office before I scheduled the appointment that I wasn't sure if she was in heat or not and she said if she was in heat or pregnant then there was a 20 dollar extra charge because it would be messy in there. I remember thinking I hope she didn't come from the breeders pregnant because that would hurt my heart if they terminated a pregnancy. She is 8 months old, I wanted an older puppy so I would be able to tell more about her looks. I've had her for a month. |
You can spay during their heat but because their is extra blood and I think more blood vessels to tie off, it is safest to wait. Either way is fine though. |
1 Attachment(s) hope your baby is all better now,, 2 of our girls are spayed,, and anyone reading this with it upcoming,, as for me,, i'd highly recommend laser surgery!! Cricket has laser surgery and NO problems,, no pain,, no recovery (but for my nerves),, Daisy we didnt DO laser as she is 9.5 pounds ,, vet said it would be called for necessarily,, she'd do fine,, well ,she did,, but for 4 days,, she'd pee and poop anywhere,, and look confused,, i think caused by the pain and pain meds,, once i was pretty sure she was no longer IN pain i stopped her pain meds and she was ok after that,, but her recovery took SO much longer,,,:) |
I'm glad to hear that all the Yorkies are feeling better. Like everyone has said, in some way or another, spaying a dog can cause all kinds of effects. I think the most important thing to remember is that no matter if your dog is in heat or not, its still surgery. I think since vets do it so often, it becomes routine to them and we get the "all will be fine" attitude from them. But, all dogs are different and all dogs still require recovery times. Bottom line though, is that YOU know your dog best and if you think there's something wrong there probably is. Don't let a vet dissuade you from this.
