Quick Avocado Q. I just discovered Otis LOVES avocado. Is it bad for him? I know it's full of good fats, but is it okay for dogs? Thanks. |
wow did you make him a nice guacamole??? lol sorry i cant help you w/your question. but would love to know the answer .... waiting patiently |
No guac. I wouldn't share that. I love my guac. I noticed he figured out a new trick, and the only thing I could reward him with was a piece of avocado from my salad. |
/28/02 "Avocados contain a toxic component called persin which has been shown to produce cardiac tissue damage, respiratory distress and mammary gland damage in a variety of animals, including horses, goats, sheep, dogs, cattle, rabbits, fish and birds," according to Jill A. Richardson, DVM, of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC). If you suspect that your animal companion has eaten avocado, or any other potentially dangerous substance, call your veterinarian or the APCC's emergency hotline at 888-4-ANI-HELP for round-the-clock telephone assistance. I gave it to him about two hours ago, and he looks normal. He seems fine. Wouldn't something have happened by now? |
Oh no I hope Otis is okay. Let us know what the vet has to say. |
WHEW!!! Just got off the phone with the vet. It's the avocado leaves and pit that are dangerous! In any event, I think Otis is going to take a rest from avocado for a while. Thanks. |
I'm glad to know that, too. I was sitting here with this dreadful fear after what I read. I found this, too: Avocado leaves - Cases of avocado poisoning are seen periodically in Los Angeles County animals. Commercial production of avocados is located primarily in southern California and Florida. Two types of avocados are grown in California (Mexican and Guatemalan) and toxicity varies. Toxicity may also vary depending upon the time of year and other factors that are poorly understood. Various species of animals are susceptible to avocado poisoning. Dried avocado seed can kill mice. http://animalcontrol.co.la.ca.us/htm...fo/Poisons.htm |
