Blood tests before neutering I will have to take Jambo in to get neutered as we near his 6 month old birthday. After asking everyone's opinion here I am also getting him microchipped. I called his vet to ask about setting up an appointment to neuter and I guess they don't require an exam before unless you request it. I am going to request it. The question to this thread is....how important are blood tests before he is put under? |
It probably only costs a few dollars more, why not, it doesn't take much to draw it and they can find his different levels. |
I think it is very important to do pre-op bloodwork before a dog is put under. I also think all yorkies should have a bile acid test done before being put under for the first time as well. Better to be safe than sorry...he could have underlying problems that you aren't aware of. I really think all vets should require this |

Ellie's vet charges about $100 for preop bloodwork and it is worth every penny. I will not allow Ellie to be put under without it. They also don't recommend skipping it. Here is a good read about anesthesia and avoiding unnecessary risks: http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Con...=11&A=1607&S=0 I would only allow a vet to put Ellie under if they comply with 1, 2, 3 and 4 (I don't think halothane is as safe as iso or sevo though...maybe). I allow Ellie's vet to choose what monitoring equiptment she uses. We have never talked about it... I'm sure we will someday though.:p |
Conner had bloodwork before he was supposed to have his LP surgery. The vet said his liver levels were high and would not do the surgery at that time. I have to give him pills everyday for 30 days, and he goes back to be retested. I am glad the vet did the bloodwork. |
