Microchip Opinions Needed My baby will need to be neutered soon and I am weighing the pros and cons of micro-chipping and would like to get everyone's take. He is never outside without supervision and is primarily inside. He is never left in the car or anywhere alone except at home for a few hours at a time. I have heard that microchipping has been found to cause tumors since it is a foreign body inserted into the animal. I want to do what is best for him.....just trying to figure out if it is necessary to do something that can be potentially harmful. |
The negative for me is that its only usefull if someone finds your pup and takes em' to a vet office where it can be scanned. Its not a tracking device or anything and I too have heard of it possibly causing tumors as well... For those reasons, I chose not to get one... but, Ive read stories where its been a life saver :) |
I personally believe the benefits of the chip outway the risk of a tumor. My vet scans all his furpatients before examination, just to be sure they are who you say they are. What if someone broke into your house and snatched your puppy, and then he was found later miles away, How would you be able to prove he was infact yours? Both my babies are chipped and healthy. |
the chance of developing a tumor is very small. I got Morgan microchipped. she is never outside unsupervised either, and i watch her like a hawk. But how many stories have we read on here where their yorkie slipped out the door or under the fence and was lost. If that does happen, and someone finds and decides to keep her I like to hope that the vet would scan their new found dog and discover that its chipped. Then they can track down the real owner. Or if the dog ends up in a shelter they too will scan the dog to look for a chip. i'd rather have that little bit of a safety net, then not have it. |
I give Micro-chipping the  ! What if someone opened your door and your baby got out - even if it was an accident. I agree that it outways the possible risks. But you have to be comfortable w/the final decision! |
I also think Micro-chipping is the reason Venassa Williams got her Yorkie back:) |
From Personal Experience of having a lost dog, I will never again have a dog without one. Sure it isn't a tracking device but Homeagain claims about 96% return rate on missing pets with the microchip. Losing a dog is heartbreaking enough, but at least if you take as many preventive measures as you can you will know you did your best. |
I got Lily chiped better safe than sorry. |
Why would someone be against it? |
I am in the same boat! Always inside except for potty, but you never know! But then as somebody said, whenever I have taken a new yorkie into the vet, and it is an office full of different vets, never once have they scanned the puppy. But I am really leaning towards it as I would be devistated if I ever lost (or they were stolen) one of my babies. |
Chloe's a cyborg! :p We got her microchipped last year. We decided to upgrade the chip and had a Pentium core duo processor installed. -----> OK, not really. That was a joke.:D |

The only one of my dogs that has it is my biewer, and, that's only because he came with it already(it was done in Germany)..I never plan on my dogs going anywhere without me, and as someone else said, they only work, if someone would happen to take the dog in to the vets for something(if they were stolen)..I guess it's everyone owns personal preference on that.. |
I want one of those! Quote:
A Laptop Yorkie :yelrotflm You guys are killing me! :lol tears |
I don't want to get one for Parker. I only thought about it if I take him to Germany when I visit my daughter who lives there. He can't get in the country without it. Otherwise, I won't have it done. I will probably just have to trust my Mom watching him.:( |
