I think I'm hurting by dog by feeding her wrong food Has anyone tried Orijen from Alberta? I have been feeding her cooked beef, liver, heart, tongue and lamb with sweet potatoes or white potatoes vegetables, or brown rice with carrots & pea and chicken, I do not all spices just boil all together. Now reading I think I’m missing out on the vitamin & minerals. Chelsea’s 1 yr old next month, her poop is black not to hard. She only poops once a day unless I change her food again. Which will take her two days to go after she eats she farts a lot no poop? I hope I’m not damaging her by not feeding her right. |
I have been feeding her cooked beef, liver, heart, tongue and lamb with sweet potatoes or white potatoes vegetables, or brown rice with carrots & pea and chicken. I don't know for sure, but I don't think that feeding the above organs (cooked) everyday is very good for them. I know that cooked liver is very dangerous is high quantities. The other stuff sounds good, but you need to add supplements when home cooking. |

All mine get is dog food, I don't think anyone knows enough about feeding them all this other stuff, and to me, it's just not healthy.. |
dont' worry.. it's fixable :) you need to feed a meat a veggie and a grain (if you want) and then a suppliment. You can go to a small dog food store and get one made by Solid Gold.. it's great... BUT if you want to go to kibble Orijen is SUPERB! if you want more info on homecooking feel free to PM me.. i have been feeding layla successfuly on it for almost a year and with a bit of research it can be done.. there are lots of people on here who do it... you definitly had the best intentions :) just need a bit of changing! so PM me if you want :) I'm more than happy to help! it's the best thing you can do for your dog! good for you for taking it on (i know it can be a bit overwhelming at first :) ) |
Good for you for feeding "real" food. Here is one of thousands of links out there letting people know about the dog food industery's. Also buy the book, FOOD PETS DIE FOR by Ann N. Martin. http://www.dogs-4life.com/does-your-...ized-dog-.html |
and if you are looking for a good book about homecooking Dr. Pitcairn's Guide is a great resource for getting started! |

I just wanted to encourage you to stick with feeding real food :) I feed raw and believe that's the best way to go for most dogs, but I think homecooking is the second best...either way, your dog will be much healthier than if it eats commercial kibble (as long as you are feeding correctly). There are a lot of members on here that homecook and can point you in the right direction so far as recipes or seeking out a nutritionist to consult. Good Luck  |
By the way, original poster, I started out without supplementing also. Live and learn:) |
i think you should stick with home cooking, cuz i think it's the best..i wish i have time to do it or maybe i am lazy..ehehe. Like others said, just use the supplements and use good quality meat and grains..i on the other hand feed mine Natures Variety Raw and i do give them Orijen (six Fish) kibbles when i don't have time to watch them eat raw and clean up after the monsters..ehhe..IMO, orijen is an excellent food! |
I went to the pet store and she advised me that Orijen was to high of protein 28% for Yorkies (bad for kidney and liver) so I got Innvo 24% protein, well, there was no way Chelsea wld eat it. I think I will keep making her food. Yr right we really don’t know if products are true. I will take you up on yr offer for recipes. Thank all By the way I have given Chelsea a soft toothbrush, which she chews on the brush end and have noticed stuff on the toothbrush so she is cleaning her own teeth. So I don’t feel so bad giving her soft food. |
Great I'm checking it out. I have all the time in the world to prepare food for Chelsea. Just need to learn how to feed her correctly. She means the world to me. |
Feeding hard food to clean teeth is just a myth anyway. It's like if we eat cookies and crackers all day our teeth will get clean. Soft food has more moisture so is better anyway. As far as food, I think you are on the right track with homecooking, it's just I don't think all those Organs ALL the time are good for her. And you need to add supplements: A Multi, Fish Oil and Calcium (Bone Meal) |
i asked my vet abt the protein in orijen and she said since my baby have healthy livers and they are really healthy over all..there won't be any problems. also, i only give them the kibbles maybe once or twice a week. they are mainly on Natures Variety Raw. oh, and the teeth brushing part, we brush the girls teeth every night. we have this itsy bitsy tiny brush that we bought at the vet. it is funny because Tumi loves to get her teeth brushed..i guess she likes the flavor of the tooth paste. Gracie is not crazy about it but she puts up with it...:) |

High protien is ONLY a problem if your pup has a liver problem... it's a myth that all yorkies have to have low protien. I'm PM ing you :) |
anyone know why when i click on the original poster's name PMing is not an option????????????????????? |

No way is orijen bad due to the protein, maybe if they have a liver problem could it be bad but even then ive seen no hard proof to support that but then again people in the 50's thought smoking was just great for your health so who knows. Id stick to the raw and just get a little more education on what raw to feed and how. I feed orijen because im lazy, ill admit that one right now but you dont appear to be like me. If you want to make the switch to kibbles then id say orijen is the best bet only because ive had such remarkable success with it. |
