Overweight 5 month old puppy Oh my goodness, so we brought home the new baby, he is about 2lbs overweight for his breed and size and frame. Seems the breeder didnt starve him but let him eat a lot and anything he wanted. Will be taking him to the vet on Monday for a full work thru, blood, stool and the works. Since I dont know if this weight has affected his wittle body, is it ok to cut back on what he is eating to get him unused to eating so much? I will be feeding him same as Bandit chicken rice, pasta and carrots mainly and some kibble mixed in |
Ok, I examined him again, he is about double what he should be for his size and age and that is in weight I cant even feel his bones they are totall ycovered in fat. I am concerned about health problems he may or could develop as a result. Has anyone bought an obese puppy before? I saw he was obese when I picked him up yesterday but I felt it could be dealt with with a diet recommended by the vet and proper exercise. Poor little fat boy, he can hardly move fast he walks like a rolly polley:eek: :( |
well congrats.im sure the vet will give you some good advice on how to slim him down.my layla is 5months also and she seems to be hungry all the time so i watch her very closely so she dont over eat.cant wait to see pics:) |
Congratulations on your new puppy! Is there such a thing as "puppy fat"? like "baby fat"? I'm sure your vet will let you know what to feed so that he'll slim down some. I know mine put Max on a lower calorie food and he only gets so much a day, but he was a year or a little older when she did that. Puppies I think need the right nutrients to grow properly, so I'm not sure what they do for them....Good luck! |
My pom was always round compared to yorkies. She was overweight from her medial conditions but even when she is at her ideal weight she looks huge due ot her barrel body and thick, thick coat. But hopefully with your loving care he will get to his proper weight. |

No hon, this is not puppy fat, this is plain obese you cant even feel bones no wher in his body, he was over fed and grew faster than he should, poor little fellar, this is hard on him he cant even walk far he panths and is exhausted:( . He is grossly overweight not just puppy fat, that was scooby. This one is like holding on to a football with legs, its kinda sad if you ask me. I was shocked when I picked him up, the man laughed and said oh he eats a lot and I let him have what ever he wants:mad: . I am glad I rescued him if I must say so |

Hi Patti Well he will have full blood work tomorrow and I do hope the overfeeding which is a sin actually, would not have caused him any medical problems. He is reall grossly obese. Will tell you all exactly him weight and height and all that tomorrow. |
I am not sure if to panick or wait. His blood work came back problematic, his liver values were very very high, his white blood cells were all messed up and he was worm infested, poor little darling. I have to take him for one set of shots on Friday and then more blood work next week. WHAT DID THIS MAN FEED THIS BABY he is 3.5 kilos which is grossly double his weight by 100% he should be abouve 1.5 kilos for hte very maximum at this age and size. The vet couldnt say exactly why the values wre so high but we will repeat the blood work and then determine by testing. I told the m an about the liver values and you will be SHOCKED to hear what he told me.  :thumbdown :thumbdown :thumbdown Bring back the dog and they will EUTHANIZE HIM WTF:mad: |
I don't think I would be feeding him pasta, pasta isn't good for them..carbs! |
A vet is NEVER supposed to say they will put the dog down, you have to ask first.. |

That's sad about him being so overweight, but I've seen it happen to other dogs as well. I'm sure with a good diet and exercise, he'll trim down in no time. I hope that the liver values are wrong, and if not, that it's something that can be remedied easily. He's a really cute little guy! Good luck. |
They miight have left food out for him all the time and he ate it all. Maybe they just filled the container again. You might have to pick up his bowl after he eats so he isn't grazzing all day long. I hope they get him all fixed and lined out. Might take some time for him to get straightened out. Keep working on him at least you have him and maybe he can have a healthy life after he gets straightened up. Why are they so fast to put dogs down. Do they not believe in love and hard work and miracles. |
Congrats on your new pup... Kinda curious though...Your mentioning his weight as if its a problem you didnt notice when you went to pick him up  |
Hopefully the liver values are up due to him being so overweight. I will keep him in my prayers. |

I'm just wondering..You just got this puppy this past weekend, and took him to the vet for blood work? I've had blood work done on my dogs before, and it's always taken at least 48 hours to get the results back..?? |
ok so the vet said he has worms did he give you any thing for that that in it self wil cause plotting.when you brought the poop out side did you see any worms in it? and that could be the reason hes pooping mybe he just cant hold it if thats the case.if he didnt then maybe you need to seek another vet i have to agree with the last 2 post i never got blood work back that soon either.well any way good luck i hope he gets better for you:) |

I live in Europe honey and even regular doctors here you get results right away. We are a bit more advanced int hat respect:D . You also get xrays and mri's right away and see and speak to the actual doctors not primary or techs:thumbup: . so since vets all have labs and lab techs in their practices you get everything right there. All vets are equpiied with xray, mri, op room, lab etc here. That is just normal:thumbup: |

the man wont put him down for being fat. If he has chronic liver problems they would in France because they think that it is cruel to keep a young dog alive who will not live and only suffer. I will have more blood taken and then we will determine how critical it is. Even if it is critical: I WONT SEND MY BABY BACK TO BE KILLED:thumbdown |

I hope so patti. Sometimes if a dog eats too much fat he can get liver problems. But if this is genetic then there is something else. Well the man and I spoke tonight and he will take the dog back right away, but I dont want to do this. If he is infact suffering from some liver disease, then they will euthanize him and I cant live with that. I will rather take care of him until he dies. Poor baby, not another one:( |
My vets get blood work done in 2 hours. When Dixie was found to be in kidney failure I took her in at 3pm and the vet called before 5 with the bad news. A bile Acid takes 2 days but kidney and liver values can be done quickly. I am happy you are keeping him! |

I live in the States, my husband is a doctor, he knows how medicine here works, he has told me many times that European Countries have a great socilazed medicine....watch the movie "sicko" you will see what were talking about. Anyways, I hope your pup does better, he is very blessed to have a loving mom like you! :D |

Its really cold here, I need hand warmers:D . I love the little stinker to death, poor or pee or vomit I love him to death. Only place he is going is right here:D . I weighed him he is down by 100gms today, I have cut back on his food and upped the nutrients:thumbup:. Plus he gets plenty of exercise chasing bandit. bandit is very slim and runs like a race horse, dont know where he picks up this energy from as he hardly eats |

P.S. I live In Germany WINK In the USA where I am from, you have to wait two weeks to et blood work back for people, and with dogs, in those days it took a very long time. |
