Calcium Phosphorus Ratio How do you homecookers balance this to 1.2:1? Ellie's nutritionist did it for me but now I am switching everything, so I'm sure we're not balanced. I was just wondering how all of you do it. |
When I was homecooking, I think I loosely followed Pitcairn's confusing ratios in terms of Ca/Phos ratio - do you have that book? I find the delicate balance btwn ca/phos pretty challenging - it was one of the reasons I switched to raw. You might PM Yorkieluv - she might be pretty good with this question. :) |
Hopefully she sees this thread.:) I do have the book but I don't use any of that stuff. I use another supplement, so that would be balance but her actual food isn't (I don't think)... It is very confusing. I am beginning to think whoever came up with the ca/phos ratio doesn't know what they are talking about because humans don't have those needs, do they? It seems in the wild dogs wouldn't get exact amounts of anything. |

Maybe the dog food manufacturers came up with the guideline because they know it is impossible to duplicate at home. Yorkieluv, Yorkiedaze, Marcerella02, Suzy...ANYONE, any idea how to do it? |
BUMP... I know someone must have the answer. |
Hope this might help you. The following was provided to me by Sabine Contreras, Canine Nutritionist. I provided a link to her site, she has been a great nutrition advice source for me. Quote]You are correct that the amount of calcium you need to supplement depends on how much is already on the recipe, but it also depends on two other things: 1. how much in total is needed to meet the daily RDA of the dog in question (which is a non-linear progression based on body weight) and 2. how much is needed to balance the phosphorus content in the food to an acceptable level (around 1.3 to 1 is ideal for most normal healthy dogs, but up to 2:1 is generally also still acceptable[Quote http://www.betterdogcare.com/ |
Honestly, I'm not 100% positive about how to balance the calcium:phosphorus...I am pretty sure that in Dr. Pitcairn's book, he states that the KAL Bone Meal or Solid Gold Bone Meal used in the quantities stated do provide the correct ratio. |
Hi Crystal - I wanted to PM you, but I see you're not set up for PMs. Anywho, just wanted to show you this book I ordered: While most folks wouldn't find this book too thrilling, I know I will - and I thought you'd probably understand my excitement over the book's 1192 pages of animal nutrition!!! LOL. I will also check, once I receive it, if there is any info on cal/phos - and I could always scan it for you if it proves helpful. Woo hoo! :) |

I don't use his book to cook for Miko either...But I do follow some of the general guidelines for Emma :) I do like the healthy powder mix for her, but not for Miko. |
Sorry Crystal.. a little slow seeing this.. HONESTLY.. i just make the healthy powder and dont' give it another thought until every 6 motnhs she has a blood panal and then i'll know if she is getting what she needs.. something tells me those *wonderful* dog food manufactures dont' care that much about it.... maybe it's a myth like the protien thing??? i'm nto sure.. i'm going to go read about it and if i find anything out.. i'll be back :) |
Atleast I'm not the only one that's confused. I'm sure Layla is fine (with her vitamin/mineral levels) but a blood panel wouldn't necessarily show even if she isn't. Just because the calcium level in her blood is correct doesn't mean a whole lot because if she isn't getting enough from her food, her body will take it from her bones (depleting them). The bones won't show this until 30-40% depletion. So although a blood panel is a good idea, it might not show anything. |
There are a couple of vet schools that do vitamin analysis tests to find out if your dog is getting enough of or too much of or just the right amount of vitamins, etc. I know MSU does it.. |
