Chew stick spoiled and dangerous Got the results back from vet.....believe it or not....vet said the chew stick he was chewing was spoiled.......she is a great vet.....tested the stick.....after testing Eddie out on everything she could think of . I mentioned that he would feel good one day then bad the next....she told us to log his actions for a day......then it struck us......the evening he chewed his chew stick...he was sick the next day....the chew stick was at least 4 months old...dark brown in color.... 6in long and smelled of smoke flavor...cost 1.25 each. I guess it had expired 2 months ago. I have never heard of such a thing. |
Wow, what a good observation. I'm sure we can all use this. |
Great info-thanks for passing this along to all of us here! |
oh my, did you let the store know where you bought it? I always wonder about those things |
WOW Now that is scary.. TFS info |
Chew stick spoiled Maybe that is what is wrong with Tricksie. She got her first Bully Stick yesterday that I ordered on line, didn't check the expiration date, |
thanks for posting the great detective work I would never have thought to check for those things haveing an expiration date, I will look for this the next time I buy bully sticks. Eileen |
Oh my gosh! We gave up on bully sticks even tho our furbaby loves them because she got sick every time she chewed them. We thought maybe she was getting too much and it was getting stuck in her gut. But maybe they were just old. |
Those bully sticks and others like them are totally loaded in chemicles to keep them from rotting on the shelves, but they do go bad. Most dogs get diarrhea from those things and they are not good for them either. |

My puppy got sick from one of those busy bones so I thought to buy them some rawhide twists made by american rawhide. Now both my 11wk old yorkie and 7 month old cavalier/toy fox love them and it keeps them both busy. I have had no problems with diarrhea in either of them. I do know that not all rawhides are made equal, I picked mine up from petco just randomly but they seem to be good. |
This is great info to know....I have some bully sticks that I bought last April after I got my lil furbaby...but I have noticed lately that when ever I give them to her she seems to have runny poop for the following couple days, so I have quit giving them to her...just tried one this evening that was sent to me and will see how she does....think I am going to toss the previous ones... |
