Legg Perthes
 
Princess has Legg Perthes disease. I have her scheduled for surgery,but I'm interested if anyone's yorkie has had this surgery,and if so,how long did it take for your baby to recover?Did you have to put your yorkie in a cage?(Pook would be so sad.She stays next to me ALL the time!!),or did the vet put the leg in a sling?Any info about the recovery would be helpful;I've done research about Leg Perthes,and vet has explained why it's needed and how he'll do it,but I'm interested about the recovery process.Any info is appreciated

The surgery for Legg Perthes disease is called a FHO (femoral head ostectomy). the ball head of the femur that fits in the hip is going to be removed. It is a fairly easy and quick surgery for an accomplished surgeon. Recovery period is about 6 weeks. She should be kept in a crate when unsupervised or kept on a leash at your side. No bandage is applied because the incision is just over the hip. A sling that goes under the belly and the handles held by you is helpful with some but the tiny ones usually do fine without one. a scarf or leash can be used as the sling since yorkies are so small. Walking is a very important part of recovery. she should have at least three slow walks a day starting at 5-10minutes long. They can begin the day after surgery. Walking slow will encourage her to put her leg down and use it. Sometimes it can take 1-14 days for them to begin toe touching because its so easy for the small ones to hold up the leg and not use it.

Abbie had the surgery about one year ago ( actually where Kalina82 works!). Abbie came through the surgery fine. We crated her when we could not give her our absoulute attention. Now she runs, jumps, and uses that leg all the time.

Good luck with the surgery. Conner is also scheduled for surgery on 1/21. I am taking a week off work after his surgery (luxating patella).

Bianca had it 12-4-06. She was 9 mos old. If you would like , PM me and I will tell you all about it, and show you pics of her after surgery. (the area)

She healed much faster than expected and she didnt lose her leg and can walk on all fours now! :)

Thanks so much for all your knowledge and care! I am so concerned for her.It's so sad to watch her limp around.I can't wait to see her run around and play without pain.

Milo had the surgery al little over a year ago. I think I was worse than him. slept on the floor with him because I was afraid he would try to jump on the bed. The hardest part was getting him to slow down. The most important thing you can do is be strong and don't baby, when we went back to the Vet to discuss rehab he said that Milo was doing so well he did not need it.

My little 4 pounder had the surgery when she was 7 months old. It went very well. She didn't have any problems.

They told me to let her walk as soon as she was able as this would help it heal and not stiffen up. Of course you have to watch and make sure they don't jump around, but they usually don't feel like doing that anyway.:)

She usually walks on all fours now but still holds that leg up when running or wanting to walk faster.
