yorkie diet Hi All, I have a few questions about diet. Madison is 18 months old. When she was a baby, she would eat a holistic dog food. That quickly ended when she realized that we would cook for her, anytime day or night, until she would find something she liked!! So, since then, we have her on a diet of boiled boneless white chicken, extra lean hamburger, occasionally very lean steak and brown rice and boiled carrots. For snacks she will eat, rice cakes, peanut butter, and cheese. Occasionally, she will have carrots, broccoli, strawberries or melon. Her absolute favorite food is pizza and pasta, however, this is very rare, and unfortunately, she has a very sensitive stomach and usually ends up sick after eating this. Every day she takes a multi-vitamin (New-Vet). We are concerned that she is not having enough variety in her diet. She absolutely refuses to eat any dog food or snacks. We have tried Blue brand, Artemis, Royal Canine, Wellbalance, and other natural/holistic brands, all to be given away! We do not mind cooking for her. Is she eating a well-balanced diet? What are some additonal foods we can add? Are blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries safe to eat? In general are yorkie stomachs more sensitive then other breeds? Thanks for any advice, ideas, etc. Kristen |
yorkie diet sorry, I don't know if I was clear, but, everymeal includes a protein and the brown rice and carrots. Thanks |
I don't know anything about that supplement. I can't tell you if the diet is balanced because I can't see the portions you are giving. How much meat to how much carb (if any) to how much veggie? Chicken is fine. White meat is best in my opinion. I give one tsp of olive or canola oil daily for fat (for an almost 6 pound dog). I prefer not to give peanut butter or cheese (although small amounts shouldn't hurt). Some other veggies you can use besides carrots are green beans, squash, bell peppers, broccili (limited), cauliflower... Some carbs are brown rice, sweet potato, oatmeal... |
thanks Thank you for your input. She has about 6-8 ounces of protein per day with about 1/2 cup of brown rice, vegetables are a bit difficult to get her to eat. The olive oil is a good idea. Lately, she has been eating frozen blueberries and seems to like them. I will continue to try to add extra fruits and veggies. I just get worried that she is not having enough of what she needs. Thanks Again! |
What exactly is a "new vet" vitamin? Do you have the ingredients? How much calcium is she getting a day? This part is so important. I do feed fruit but not too much (no grapes or raisins). |
sorry. it is actually "Nu-Vet", the web sight is www.nuvet.com. they do contain calcium. no, i never give her grapes or raisins. thanks! |
I don't see a problem with these vitamins but there is no way to tell how much calcium is in them. Most dog vitamins (it appears this one is included) are made to supplement actual dog food. That is fine but dog food already has all the nutrients a dog needs. Homecooked doesn't so you may need more powerful vitamins. You could ask this company how much calcium is in this and/or supplement with some. |
hi,there is 100mg per serving. thanks |
