Urination Problems Update Things aren't getting any better.:( Since I posted about Ellie's two accidents she had four more. All six happened within about 50 hours. GRRRRRR So she peed on the bedroom floor when she shouldn't have had to go at all (not a little spot like marking), then last night she peed on a chair:mad: (she had good reason to have to go but there is no reason for doing it on a chair), then we were outside 1 hour and 15 minutes later and she had to go, then we went outside 45 minutes later and she went. Obviously three times (chair, outside, outside) in two hours is not normal. I was searching online and her symptoms (with her being the nervous and hyperactive dog that she is) match hyperthyroidism. It is very rare in dogs but I wonder if her vet has tested her blood for it. I called her and I will talk to her within the next few days. |
Has she been tested for a urinary tract infection. Cali did that peed on the bed and never had done that before. SHe had an infection with crystals. The meds cleared it up. I just took a urine sample in and they tested it and gave me the meds. Bloodwork will show if the kidney's are functioning properly and they can to specific tests for thyroid. I have a pom who was first diagnosed with hypothyroidism and she would eat like it was her last meal, drink a lot, pee more frequently and lost fur and weight. Hopefully the vet can quickly rule out things and determine what is going on. |
I'm sorry. I shoud've posted the original thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=110701 |
Sorry I should have read it! Dixie was diagnosed with the bloodwork they do preanesthetic since it shows kidney and liver function. |
I hope you can find the answer soon for the little one :aimeeyork |
Did you say they ruled out incontinence? Loki takes a drug called PPA for incontinence (there's more to his issue...) and it works great! He would drink so much that he would essentially pee in his sleep. During the day it was more like what you described, he would ask to be let out a lot and occasionally have accidents even when he knew he should go outside. Once he was on the PPA he started to always be able to make it outside and he would wake up to let us know he needed to go. PPA is safe - Loki has no side effects. |

I just talked to the vet. She said if my gut is telling me it is not behavioral then we will have to do more testing. We will do another u/a and thyroid test. If both come back normal we will probably go to ultrasound because there is a possibility that Ellie could have tumors or polyps if her symptoms aren't going away.:( I really don't think this is the case but we have to find out. |
Sounds a lot like what was going on with Lacy for a while, but worse. In August I started vet school. Before that she was with me all day every day at work. She hadn't had an accident in the house in forever. My roommate came back in town then too. Lacy had had accidents in her room before and I had kept her bedroom door closed all summer while she was out of town so she wouldn't go in there. Well, my roommate has a cat and she had to keep her door open so her cat could get to his littlebox. Lacy started having accidents in her room again. I just thought it was a behavioral issue at first, but her accidents got more frequent and then she peed on my bed. She was also drinking more water than normal. So I took her to the vet right away. She took a urine sample and found a few inflammatory cells and she did a full blood panel which came back normal. So She took a urine sample to send of for a culture and sent me home with antibiotics. Lacy stopped having accidents. However, the culture came back clear. The vet I saw told me that sometimes the cultures come back clear but the owner will report that the dog gets better with antibiotics. Lacy was on antibiotics for close to three weeks total. Her accidents stopped and her water intake decreased. So I really do think she had a mild UTI. Well, not too much later she started having accidents in my roommate's room occasionally again. This time I knew it was behavioral...she wasn't having accidents anywhere else except my roommate's bedroom and they were only once every few days or so. I think that there was already a urine smell on the carpet and therefor she thought it was okay to pee there. So good thing is she picked on room to have her accidents in, but bad new is I really need to get that carpet cleaned now. My roommate moved out in December so that room has been shut off and we have no more accidents again. So the only thing I can think of is maybe she did have a UTI, but she smells urine on the couch and chairs where she had accidents before or remembers peeing there. and now possibly it's behavioral? I don't know...these situations can be so complicated when our dogs aren't 100% potty trained to begin with. I don't have any other advise to offer but thought I'd share my experience. I'd continue with any tests your vet recommends to be safe. Maybe you can keep Ellie away from these new accident spots for a while to see if her accidents stop to determine if it's possibly behavioral or not. Good luck |
Thanks for your thoughts.:) I can understand her peeing on the furniture being behavioral. I can't understand her going three times in two hours. It is all so frustrating. Sometimes I wish she could talk. |
