Yorkie Choking, PLEASE HELP! Hello Everyone, im new to this forum and i have been reading so many threads and i love all the advice. Well, i just purchased a new yorkie girl, and her name is Remy. she is so good, she is about 13 1/2 weeks old now @ 2.7LBS. Anyways she is very very active and LOVES to chew on EVERYTHING she can get her teeth on. Well i got her from a breeder which i thought was a very honest breeder (which she wasnt). Right after i got her she said call me if you have any questions and i did, but she NEVER replied back. Also she did give me a 1 year health guarantee, but she seemed kind of fishy because when i was talking to her she was like "oh no you don't know to take her to the vet, she is very healthy" which she is. Anyways, if i took her advice and DID NOT send her to the vet within 72 hours the aggreement would have been nulled. But i am not that stupid. Anyways.. i took her to Banfield and left her there the entire day (which they told me to just drop her off, for her physical), and they called me around 1pm and said she was healthy. They asked me if there was any problems, and i told them that she has been coughing alot, well not actually coughing, more like choking, like she's trying to get something out of her throat, or trying to throwup, like there is something stuck in there. Anyways, she does this maybe once or twice during the day and then once at night when we are asleep, but again she is very active and doesnt seem to bother her. She seems pretty healthy to me but again im not sure and i already took her to the vet and they didnt say anything about it, they just said she was healthy. So if anyone can give me a clue what it may be, that would be great. THANK YOU! |
sounds like collapsing trachea sp?:( |
Could be kennel cough. Search for other posts for it. |
congrats on your new baby ! first i wanted to say i have never heard of leaving a dog there to get an exam nor would i leave my baby there ....sounds very weird to me that they would even need that much time unless you said to leave her there second it sounds like your baby has kennel cough she will need medication for that so back to a vet i wouldnt go to that one again good luck with your new baby & please post pics ! |
It seems to be Banfields way of doing full exams. Instead of having the pt's owners wait they keep the pt several hrs to get all the tests done and the results. |
I don't know what it is. This is the second time I have heard of leaving a dog at Banfield for a routine appt. It is not normal and I would never do it. This is the time when you should talk to the vet about vaccines, spay/neuter, training, diet and concerns. Besides, it's just not normal. You should never have to drop off for a physical, only hospitalization or extensive testing. |

The tracheal on these guys are very delicate and it's possible hers is a bit too soft. (don't put collars or anything else on her neck.) If they get excited or scared it usually triggers a coughing episode. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do about it. There is also the posibility she could have kennel cough, which sounds the same way, with the dry cough then wretching. For that you can put a steamer in the area with her which helps quite a bit. It's just a cold and has to run it's course. Medications will not cure it, only time can. Warm hugs to you and your baby. |

banfields always do this.... alot of the time they will do this for people that work.. so they can drop their pet off and pick it back up after work... but also for their full exams because they dont do it all at once... they take breaks between each thing they do usually (at least the banfeild thats in the petsmart i work at does) |
It might be allergies or have you given her new food? Sometimes just coming into a new home is stressful for a puppy. My little ones will every now and then do the gagging(almost sounds like something stuck in the throat, or maybe they want to throw up)then all of a sudden stop. I think if it lasts over a week take your puppy to a different vet. If she's eating and going to the bathroom just fine then it might just go away on it's own. Another thought is if she flew to you, she might have been exposed to kennel cough on the plane(lots of dogs go through there). Good luck, I'm sure she'll be better in no time. |
Thank You!!! Thank you for everyone with all the great advices... i LOVE this site! |
My dog is the same way and he got kennel cough from going to the vets office. They put him on antibiotics for two weeks and he has gotten better but from the research i have done it can take several weeks to get over. He has had it for about a month now. |
Welcome to YT! I hope everything works out for your little one. Do you need help finding a different vet? |
Welcome to yt:) |
I have 2 yorkies(one is 5 mos) and a german yorkie..the oldest yorkie has reverse sneezing attacks(almost everyday), the other 2 gasp occasionally like something is stuck in their throats..I just rub their throats..you can research reverse sneezing(it's kind of a honking sound), and collapsed tracheas...goodluck.. |
