Worried We just had a litter of 4 pups. The 3 of them were born at normal weights. about 3.5 oz and 4. The little one was born at only 2oz. He dropped down to 1.8oz then after 8 days is only 2.5oz. The 3 others are about 7 and 8oz. I am trying to feed him a few drops of supplement but he eats very little at a time. What can I do any suggestions would help. Has anyone ever had a small pup and he lived. I am beside myself, he seems strong though. Thank you, Cali Bedell |

Many of mine have been born at 2 oz., and they do live. He must be sucking, to still be alive at 8 days old. If you were to lose one, it is usually at 3 days old. Try to make sure that he isn't tossed out of the food line by the bigger siblings. When they are asleep, try to sneak the little one in for some milk from mom. Supplementing is good too, if he acts hungry. Some are just destined to be smaller. If he seems strong, and gaining weight, you'll probably be OK. |

Although it seems that your puppy isnt thriving At least it has shown some weight gain. My little girl in this litter was 2.5 oz and went back and forth between 2-2.5 oz. At 1 week she had gone up to 3.1 oz and now she is still smaller thant he male. He is 11 oz and she at almost 3 weeks is 9 oz. So in approx 3 weeks she has tripled her weight. If it is gaining then maybe it will be fine. the smaller ones dont seem to gain as much because they start out smaller but 1/2 an ounce is a gain no less.I would be sure that it is getting enough nursing time on mom even if you have to remove all puppies but it from her and let it nurse. Many times the smaller ones are just a day or 2 younger than the other pups in the litter, i know it sounds strange but if their egg was fertilized at a later date it is possible, Many times it takes a while to catch up but in the long run a lot of the smallest ones end up being the largest or at least not the smallest. You almost can't tell a difference between my 2 puppies beside the girl being shorter . Bon |

I too have had the smaller babies under 2 oz. But it seems that yours should do fine, as long as he is gaining you are doing everything right. One of mine took forever to gain his birth weight back and I thought many times I would lose him. I know how stressful this can be, just keep doing what you are doing, supplementing and making sure he is warm. |

I have lost one that small (she was doing ok but I think she got stepped on by momma) and have had to tube feed a few to keep them alive. Dont wait too long, they go down fast. My advice is to learn how to tube feed if you dont already know how. It is scary at times and I dont like it but sometimes it is what you have to do to keep them alive. Good luck. |
