she won't even look at raw :( Today was supposed to be our first day of raw... so i gave it to her... she sniffed it and walked away.. and it is WELL beyond meal time (it's 1 o'clock here.. she usually eats around 11-12) and i'm so upset... i thought she would just eat it up! Layla LOVES meat and everyone on here has been saying their pups just love it... i'd be so upset if she won't even give it a shot... i want to be doing the absolute best for her and if she wont' even try it how will she know if she likes it or not? *sigh* i'll give it another hour and then give in and give her her normal meal (homecooked) any thoughts??? i'm feel so disappointed. |
Maybe she has to get used to the food being semi-frozen. When you homecooked was the food warm or room temperature? I can't offer much help I just switched to Nature Variety 1 1/2 weeks ago. |

I always warm the home cooked meals I make. If I switched to raw, do they eat if cold, or could I warm it? |
I don't think the Nature Variety has a strong smell to it. I can't really tell. (I have allergies, which have been bothering me lately.) Maybe try mixing the homecook with the Nature Variety. Maybe it didn't have a strong enough smell to make her interested. Then, cut back on the homecook. Quote:

They are supposed to eat it cold. If I understand this correctly- If you warm it is cooks it and then it is not raw. I'm unsure since I am still new with this. Quote:

That happened to me too..when I first switched Chloe from dry kibble to NV RAW. She was looking at me like, " What is that, Mommy? What are you feeding me?" So, what I did was putting the meat on my hand and let her found out what it was....then she finally warmed up to it and gave it a try! Another suggestion will be....maybe cook the NV RAW just a little bit to bring out the smell....I did that when Chloe was sick of eating chicken...once I cooked it and she smelled the food...she ate it!! Don't give up!!! |
Is layla really small? i cannot remember. Missing a meal probably won't kill her. If it were my dog i would pick up the food, give her nothing else, and then try again at dinner time when she might be more hungry to try new things. if she doesn't eat the dinner meal within a half hour then i'd mix some in with her homecooked. Hopefully she'll eat it then. |
Mmmmm...semi-frozen, raw meat...sounds so tasty.:p Just kidding, I'm sure to a dog...or most dogs...it's a yummy treat. I would just give her time. Make sure that she doesn't go too long without eating though. I tried that whole 'she'll come around and eat it eventually' theory, had a dog that would eat only what she absolutely had to and got to visit the ER vet as a result.:( And this was all in a matter of less than 3 days time. Maybe you could gradually switch her over...add some of her other, cooked food in with it and gradually change the ratio to include more raw? I'm not an advocate of raw in the least bit, but regardless, I don't think I would change food cold turkey (no pun intended) on any dog. Good luck! |
You can do a quick sear of the medallion to bring out the smell. Just a second on each side and that's it...that way it doesn't actually cook but might smell more to her |

You have been a great mommy in making home made dishes. I did this for about 3 months last year and my dogs loved it. May take a little while for Layla to ween off from mom's good cooking. |
I put mine in the microwave just about 10 sec. Just enough to take the chill out of it. |
It took Jambo some time to warm up to it too. He ate his dry kibble so well. I know exactly how you feel. When he wouldn't eat it, I felt quite bad for starving him when he was quite content with what he was eating before. I was ready to turn in the towel after a day but I knew I was just being a ninny so I just kept at it. I tried to hand feed it to him and he would take bites here and there. Oddly enough, he likes his food a little crunchy so he doesn't like it too thawed though he gets the shivers after. He eats it fine now but I still have moments with him not touching his bowl when I switch the meat but I know it is important to have variety so I keep at it. |
that's how Tumi and Gracie were for a few days!! now they go crazy over them..just give her some time..she'll come around in no time!:) |
Kalina liked it more as time went on. Now she won't eat anything but. As for Matilda, I noticed that she would shiver violently when I fed her the cold nuggets (probably because she's so small), so I microwave hers for 11 seconds and then mush around. It's not cooked, still raw, but less cold. She loves it now too. |
