Is there a vet or health nutrisionist here First off, let me start by saying.. Admin, I'm sorry if I posted in the wrong section. And if I posted wrong, please let me know where to make the right post. OK, I am looking for a vet or a health nutritionist to advise me on how I should go about getting Kayah to lose weight... Or just anyone who has had this (or a similar) problem before She SHOULD weigh between 5 1/2-6 pounds BUT weighs a whopping 9:eek: She does free-feed.. but doesn't eat much of her food.. and never eats canned.. AND she's even picky about the treats she eats.. Now, the bad thing is: she does eat table food... I live with my boyfriend and his parents (my really my ideal arrangement) And they're the ones who really feed her the table food. I admit, I will give her a piece or two of something (we all eat healthy) BUT only when I'M DONE eating. Now lately, she doesn't even beg for the food when she's begging.. it sounds almost as if she's demanding it:mad: I got very upset with her today for doing this. Another problem, Is that the future parents-in-law.. actually have been calling her over to give her food... she'll be sitting on the couch minding her own buisness and all I hear is "Kayah come"  It gets me sooooo mad.. Now, considering she only eats about 15 grains of her own food all day.. Sometimes, I don't mind them feeding her.. As I mentioned before, we all eat healthy food.. but it's those times they call her or when I see extra bowls by her food that get me poed.. As long as I'm under their roof, I know I don't have much to say (although she is MY dog).. but I was hoping someone will have some suggestions on what I COULD DO to keep her from gaining even more weight and hopefully something that will have her lose weight... Should I just stop giving her the kibble?? PLEASE someone help!! |
Check the fat content of your kibble, and cut out the table food altogether. Increase the exercise and play time. |
You know I would call the future parents-in-laws that she is over weight since you moved there and all treats have to stop. Stand your grown but say it kindly. |
I would tell them that she is overweight and her health is at risk and the vet said no more table food. Make sure they know how serious this is. Of course if they are like most in-laws they will disreguard everything you say... . I think that she is overweight because of the table food and snacks. That is why she doesn't eat much of her kibble. If you stop giving the kibble and homecooking then I would feed twice a day and that is it. Good luck. |
I've told them numerous times before to stop.. They are just so thick-headed:rolleyes: I yell at Kayah when she begs for it... she doesn't ask me anymore.. ha! I really do think it's all the treats that she's eating is what's doing it to her.. I'm going to sit down with them and tell them to cut it down... Hopefully by fall we'll finally have a place of our own *fingers crossed* That's gonna make it so much easier to moniter her everyday intake.. and what she actually intakes lol |
Free feeding is very bad, all those extra table scraps are worse. Fat dogs are unhappy no matter how happy they look and it can eventually cause serious health problems. I would sit them down and tell them you have to talk to them about something, kinda make a big deal out of it. When they hear what its about they will be relieved its nothing major and hopefully agree to help with your pups problem. |
absolutely no table food. pancreatisis is very common in yorkies and people food can cause problems. For the weight loss find a food that is low in fat. we are currently feeding Wellness weight management (dry kibble that i soak overnight in water) dogs need moisture and they love there food wet. it is your preference though. you don't have to wet the food. My dog also needs to lose weight bc she battles ct and her weight impacts her immensely. in one month she has lost close to a pound. For treats she gets canned wellness venison and sweet potato. (you dog will do cartwheels for this canned food) and in between they get wellness wellbites/treats they are made with blueberries, apples, oatmeal. they love these too. go to wellnessdogfood.com and check out the website. your dog would lose weight on this food. It is working for us. My yorkie is 7 lbs and needs to get back to closer to 5. she was diagnosed with hypothyroidism so that is what caused her to gain weight. the only people food she will get which is once in a blue moon... apple pieces, a sliver of potato. but thats the extent of it. good luck. the wellness weight mgt will work for you... :-) check out the site. veryyyy good dog food! highly recommend it. feed the canned wellness as treats. a healthy one too.... i hear if you feed all canned diet it is very fattening or higher in calories. not sure how true that is though. :-) |
