Question about Raw ok new year, new food for Lay. I have defrosted a medallion of NV. Question though. I bought the bag probably in October of last year.. opened it and then never ended up starting because Lay got sick and then with going away for 3 weeks i didn't want to go back and forth.. ANYWAYS>> so tonight i opened it to thaw one (which by the way does NOT look like enough food) and there are like ice crystals on the medallions... are they still good to eat? i HATE to throw away this bag because it costs a lot and my parents would kill me (they hate that she is eating raw.. so i'm fighting an uphill battle alone) anyways... do you think it will still be ok? |
I think it would be ok. You could thaw one out and if it smells horrid, then maybe not, but if it just smells like raw meat I would use it.:) I just switched to prey model feeding but using NV raw before, I never thought it looked like enough too. I guess it was though, they did great and didn't lose weight. |
I just bought a bag of Nature Variety today. It has ice crystal on a few pieces. I was a little concern because I first went to another pet store. They told me that their supply all had freezer burn. They were going to let me take as much as I want for free, and theywere not going to sell it anymore. I ask if it was safe and they didn't know. I said, "No thanks." (I couldn't believe that they would even attempt to give it away, if they didn't know it was safe. ) So, I was a little concern when the bag I purchased from the 2nd store had ice crystals. I googled freezer burn and Nature Variety freezer burn. It said that dogs don't care about freezer burn. I used the pieces that didn't have ice crystals. I am also curious what other people have to say about this. |
I actually e-mailed my Nature's Variety rep about this last night and got a response from her today. Here was her reply: 2) What is the freezer "shelf life"? (bc sometimes I buy bags and I swear the meat looks already freezer burned) The frozen has a year shelf life. You are probably seeing crystals and not freezer burn. Freezer burn is crackled and dry with Black on the edges. Freezer burn occurs when the raw is cmpletley thawed out and re-frozen. Our medallions stay at -10 until they get to the store level...where they are kept at 0. The crystals are normal and are the moisture being drawn out from the veggies and fruits. Where it is humid is where you will have more crystals. You will sometimes see a swirl color in the meat. This is the organ meat vs. muscle meat. |

Marci, I don't know about the ice crystals for sure, but I think it should be ok. I use the Primal pre-made raw and they come in the 1 oz nuggets also. I wanted to let you know that Kalina is 5 1/2 lbs and holding steady. I feed her 4 oz a day. She is doing great on that amount. If she starts to gain too much I'll probably cut her down to 3 oz. The baby was 1 lb. 12 oz. when I got her last month. I immediately switched her to the raw and she is now 2 lb. 6 oz. The Vet said yesterday that she's doing "amazingly well" on the raw. |
