milk hi, i am having problems getting mickey who is 8mths to drink enough fluid.i have heard milk isnt that good for dogs but he laps it up.i gave him a little half fat milk today for the first time and he drank every bit.would i be able to give him a bowl a day as a treat and water the rest of the time??? heard it can give dogs diarrhea but he has been fine. any advice please. thanks |

Well, I can't speak for cow's milk. However, ALL our dogs get fresh goats milk daily. We also give it to our barn cats. That's not to say it is in Large amounts...but is amount appropriate for size of dog. We do have Great Pyrenesse ( 2) who guard our goats and sheep. Then the standard poodles get it as well. Everyone has lush coats...we don't have diarrhea. And should by chance they don't get their morning milk....they look at me like i have a screw lose...lol....but hey....we drink it as well...lol I even saw on a ShowDog site where they sell powdered goats milk for dogs and their coats...so I don't know what to say. Things in moderation might be the key. Curious to know if anyone else feeds milk products. We also feed raw eggs...they love it. |
thats great to know thank you. i was worried that there might be some serious problems about giving milk.i would only give him a small bowl as a treat every day and water the rest of the time.he is such a picky eater and doesnt seem that excited about water so at last he likes something that he can have.i also put a bit of warm water in his wet food like the vet told me so his fluids are increased. thank you xxx:thumbup: |
Can you try chicken broth instead? You can get a big box of it at Trader Joe's for like $2. That would be less likely to make him sick. |
i am from scotland which is a pity cos i read of all thesewonderful things you all buy from petsmart etc and i cant buy anything:( . i have ordered thrivers chicken soup pouches so i am going to try him with that also. |
Are you feeding only canned food? The more canned food they get, the less they will drink because of all the moisture in it. That is why canned food is so good for them (if it is a premium kind). Please do not give chicken soup. It is very salty. You should only give low sodium broth if you want to give that but I would still be uncomfortable. Dogs can only process so much salt and excess can lead to kidney problems. |
Yes I would skip the powdered or boullion or anything like that. I was referring to like a box of low-sodium chicken stock. Maybe you could make stock yourself? I just wouldn't be comfortable giving the milk. FYI Petsmart isn't all that great. :p |
water A healthy dog will drink when it is thristy..does he pee a normal amount? If so I would say he is fine. |
sorry for being an idiot:rolleyes: do you mean like a chicken stock cube??never thought of that. i will check out the salt content of the soup as i wouldnt want to give them anything that was bad for them.it is so difficult giving him different things to eat that are good for them as mickey is such a fuss pot. his sister is a dream and eats her food no problem. |
Homogenized milk would be very bad for a puppy or dog. An eight month old puppy does not need any milk. Do you have city water or do you use bottled water? Chlorinated water could be really bad for some dogs (I hate it myself). It could be possible because of the colder weather he is just as thirsty. |

Most dogs are lactose intolerant that is why they get gas and diarreah. The goats milk has different enzymes so it doesn't effect them the same. |
