Switched to NV raw & have some questions I just started Mocha on Nature's Variety Raw Medallions today and he LOVED it! He licked the whole bowl clean and kept coming back and hoping there would be more in there lol. Anyways, I have a few questions that I'm sure will make me seem like a total newb :p According to the NV website, I should be feeding Mocha 1.7oz daily. Since each medallion is 1oz, how would I feed 1.7oz? Do I cut it up after it's been thawed and then throw out the rest of the medallion? What's the best way to do this? My next question is, when you thaw the pieces overnight, do you put them in a container/ziplock bag/etc.? I used a ziplock bag last night, but I don't want to be using a new bag every day. Is there an easier way? I was also wondering if I could feed him both frozen and freeze dried raw daily? I bring him to work with me and freeze dried would be a lot easier to give him while I'm at work. So would it be ok to feed him frozen at home and then freeze dried at work? I was really excited about going raw, but it's also made me sooo nervous, I hope I'm doing everything right  |
I think the difference between 1.7 oz and 2.0 oz is negligible. For ease and convenience, just feed two of the medallions per day. As the pup grows, he will eat/need more anyway. As far as the frozen versus freeze-dried ... I want to get some of the freeze-dried for convenience during travel periods - and because I live in Hurricane Country (it will be quite useful in my "survival kit" for the pup). So far, I haven't used it, but look forward to getting some. Lucky Pup, getting to go to work with Mommy! I see no reason why the freeze-dried wouldn't work. However, if you have a 'fridge at work for "human goodies", you should be able to slide a little medallion in there without grossing anyone out too much ;) . Besides, once they meet the little furbaby, they'll be more than happy to share space! |
I would either feed 1.5medallions or 2 medallions. If you feed the .5, just tear it in half (doesn't have to be perfect) and save the half left for the next day. You can feed 1/2 raw and 1/2 freeze dried |
Thanks for the advice you guys! I'm going to feed him 2 medallions a day. Do you usually cut/tear up the pieces at all, or do you just feed it whole? Also, how do you store the pieces that are being thawed? |
I have 4 different flavors; I take a week's worth out of the main freezer to put in the fridge freezer, stored in zip-lock bags. I'll nuke a medallion for 15-20 seconds, flip it over and let it finish thawing. When I feed the pup, I use a fork and "cut" it into smaller pieces, make like 1/4's. He still gets to tear it up, but he doesn't pull it out of his bowl and deposit it on the floor to tear it up this way. For dinner, I have the time to thaw it out in the fridge for him. |
