Nature Variety Questions
 
I switched Murphy from Canidae to Nature Variety a week ago. He loves it. It is suggested that you rotate the food. Do you wait until you finish a bag before you switch or can you rotate every few days? Murphy got sick twice during the switch, so I don't want to upset his stomach by switching too soon. I started him on lamb. What should I try next?

are you feeding raw or dry? I feed Lacy the raw and I alternate every day between venison and rabbit. We've done other protein sources as well with no problems. But every dog is different - you'll have to find out what works best for your dog. Some protein sources may be fine while some may upset the stomach.

I have a crazy question....is the raw like just raw meat, like raw hamburger meat? Does it stink? Is it bloody? (Ok thats like 3 questions)

I buy the smaller bags 3lb. and feed all of it before changing to the the next meat variety. I feed both NV raw and kibble. By feeding one variety of meat at a time you will be able to tell if your dog can tolerate it or not.

you can go to www.naturesvariety.com to read more info about it. They have different formulas. They have beef, chicken, chicken/turkey, lamb, venison and rabbit. It's been so long since I've tried the beef that I don't remember how "juicy" it was. I've found that the chicken and chicken/turkey are the "juiciest"...when I thaw them out, there is always a lot of liquid that drains from them. Thats one reason I quit the chicken/turkey because it kindof grossed me out. I've found that the venison and rabbit don't really get as juicy when they thaw. Even with the same protein source, some bags seem to thaw out juicier than others...I don't know why..guess different batches just mix a little different. But those two don't gross me out like the chicken/turkey did.

The Nature's Variety raw is raw meat, bones and organs ground up, along with some fruits and veggies. It's all ground up and mixed together and frozen into little one ounce medallions. They are probably like 2in in diameter by maybe an in thick. I always pull them apart to make it easier for Lacy to eat. No, I don't think it stinks. There's not much smell to it in my opinion.

Genie ,yes the NV raw is raw meat with ground up bone, fruits ,vegies vitamines and minerals. I have noticed the NV is not overly wet when thawed out, but other brands do seem a lot more wet when thawed. The raw diets you purchase should be frozen and you take out just enough for one or two meals at a time and thaw it out in the fridge, this minimizes bacteria .It should smell like fresh ground meat but should not stink.

Yes, the raw is raw meat, however depending on which one you get it also has ground up bone in it also. It doesn't smell too bad, just like raw meat and not bloody just like the raw meat you buy yourself.

Thanks everyone...I am considering feeding my bunch Raw, kinda grosses me out, but if it is really much better for them, I will do it anyway, I might have to get my nerve up though.

I hate touching raw chicken and hamburger meat when cooking for myself, but the raw NV really doesn't bother me much...it doesn't really look like a piece of raw meat so much to me. Maybe I'm just used to it though.

Yes, it is a whole lot better for them, but you can also try NV's Instinct Grain-Free kibble, I rotate my babies between that and the raw diet. They have duck, chicken and are coming out with a rabbit kibble really soon. My babies love the duck and the chicken, I am waiting for the rabbie to come out next and then we will try that, they love the raw rabbit.

One of my babies is also on NV's Instinct grain-free can food. She started turning her nose up to the raw when she was pregnant so I tried the can, she loves it, she eats the chicken, venison and lamb. She is on a can and kibble rotation. Hopefully I will get her back on the raw diet too.

I am glad I am not the only one that gets grossed out by raw meat...LOL

I am feeding raw. I think I will try either the venison or rabbit next. Thanks for your help.

I'm starting Zoe on the Natures Variety raw tomorrow. I bought the lamb to start with. Wish me luck! I will let you know how it goes!:)
