How much does it cost to have teeth cleaned? I just got the estimate to have Gracie's teeth cleaned next month and wow! $674.00!!!!!   This includes anesthia, two extractions ( the vet says she does not need them it is just automatically in the estimate), xrays, meds to go home with (what would they be?), Oravet application, blood work, and pain injection. I had no idea that it could be that much. I am going to call around to other vets in the area to see what they charge but does that seem outrageous or is it me? what have you paid? |
wow, that's a lot of money. if she doesnt need the teeth extractions then she won't need x-rays either. Do they take that cost off the bill? Also the Oravet application isn't needed either. Bloodwork and anesthesia are ok. The meds to go home will be antibiotics because teeth cleaning spreads bacteria when all the tartar is scrapped off. the pain shot is good too. edit: duh i remember now, you live in totowa right? what's the name of the hosp you use? |
Wow, that does seem high... We just got our girl spayed and teeth cleaned at the same time and it was $485 for both from our vet. We didn't have any extractions but I don't think that usually adds much. She was 3 years old so most the optional stuff was mandatory for her. The price included: blood work, fluids, anesthesia, laser surgery, and pain meds while she was there. Vet costs seem to very quite a bit from state to state but $674 is ridiculous! |
I go really easy on vets and their pricing but that is way too high. Ellie just got her teeth cleaned while she was spayed and it was $165 plus $97 for bloodwork and the anesthesia wasn't included. It would've probably been less than $350. Ellie had oral surgery in January. This included bloodwork, anesthesia, pain meds, antibiotics, xrays, cleaning, nine adult extractions, Oravet... and it was about $600 and we go to a higher priced vet. A couple hundred of that was probably for the extractions. Anyway, if your Yorkie has any oral problems at all (beyond needing a cleaning) please get the oravet. It does get pricey but Ellie has done great with it. It is supposed to help reduce plaque and I think it might actually work. If you decide to go with the oravet and they give you an eight week supply, you can actually spread it over 16 weeks (vet recommended it) because there is enough in one package for a large dog, so Yorkies don't need the whole thing. That way it's cheaper. |
My cat had his done and it was just under $300. I see no need for x-rays, and why include extractions in the estimate if they are not needed? Sidney had some gum disease so he had to be on antibiotics for a week or so after the procedure. There should be no pain if there are no extractions. I would shop around. |
If you live in northern New Jersey, you are probably paying top dollar for services. I have heard routine dentals are about $400-500 in the NYC area. With that in mind, I don't think that is outrageous for what your vet has included in the estimate. It's not a routine dental since Gracie needs extractions. The cost of dentals usually surprises people the first time they go through it. It's one of the expenses a lot of people don't think about when they calculate the cost of owning a Yorkie. Yes, some need it done every year. It certainly wouldn't hurt to get a few estimates, though. |
My vet charges $100-120 to clean teeth includng any extractions. |
Kalina- I go to Little Fall Animal Hospital ( we love them) but i just feel its high. If I remove the Xrays and the 2 extractions it saves me $110 dollars. The oravet is only like $20.00 so thats not a problem. I mean we are really lucky her teeth are in great shape he just feels that @ 3 and 1/2 its time so we can avoid any problems that can occur and i am in complete agreeance. The cost of vet services in Northern NJ is extremely high. My aunt lives in Ortley Beach (south jersey) and has a Yorkie. All of her basic care is usually half what we pay................ |
its $85 here in al i would look around thats WAY too much |

i didn't think little falls would be so pricey. |
Four years ago when we had Kassies done it was 589.00 and she goes again tomorrow so I am guessing it will be even more. We take her to the best vet around but even somewhere else would be about 400.00. Sherri |
Normally i dont think that they are overpriced. I just called my moms dogs vet and they will charge $300 ( give or take a few dollars) they are in West Milford so they tend to be a bit cheaper but not $375.00 dollars cheaper! Kalina can I ask the name of your vet? Your in Clifton right? |
When Chip has his teeth done it was about $250, this did not include the previous visit for bloodwork. When Zippy(15) had his done it was about $400, because they took some x-rays. |
Yeah that's alot. My vet was going to charge me over $500. too, so I called around and found a spay/neuter clinc that does dental as well, Lacey was spayed and had her teeth cleaned for $200. including blood work (she's 5 yrs. old) and pain meds. She came out of it beautifully! my advice is call around. |
Doesn't sound like you'll be able to do it this time because of the extra stuff, but in the future you should look into Anesthesia-Free Teeth Cleaning. I haven't done it myself yet but have only heard good things about it. As long as there isn't excessive tarter and no teeth to be pulled they can usually do it. I checked into awhile ago and think it cost like $100. I'm in Colorado but would think its available other places too. |
