Vaccines? Does anyone here give their own dogs the yearly vaccine? I am seriously thinking of doing it. I am just not which brand would be the best to go with. I have 2 dogs and things get expensive. I just thought this might be one way of saving a little. |
I don't give my own. It is a great way for breeders to save money but there are drawbacks. You have to deal with disposal of the waste/needles, be within a reasonable distance for a vet in case of reactions, know exactly how to give one and still make an appt. for a yearly checkup because this is probably more important than the vaccines themselves. I don't know which brand I would choose. |
Your breeder may be able to tell you what brand to give and where to get them. I was thinking of doing this myself once I got Marcel - my breeder even gave me the booster shots. I'm a nurse....and I still just didn't feel comfortable giving it to such a small guy. If my vet (or a tech) would actually teach me, then I probably would. But learning via "reading" (and even being a nurse) just wasn't enough to make me okay w/ it. |
I have a friend who breeds dogs at times and she says there is nothing to it. She swears it easier because they aren't nervous at home and it takes just sec. I could always call my vet and find out what they use.... I do know they use a vaccione that has lepto in it and I don't like that. soo... I plan to do more research before I do anything. |
I take my dog to PetSmart's Banfield Vet Center and it is the best thing for me. He has been on the puppy care plan since 3 mo and he is 7 yrs. now. When I 1st started with it it was 9.95 a mo. Now with him being mature it is 19.95. But since it comes out in monthly installments, I don't even think about it. I save alot. Also, I am able to break up his vaccines. We go at seperate times so he won't have a reaction, and I'm not charged for the vet visit each time. I do pay for medicine, but you can find the plan to suit your needs. |
I don’t give the yearly shots to my babies anymore but I gave the last ones my self, its less stressful for them |
Twenty-seven vet schools have now adopted the protocol of only vaccinating pets every three years instead of yearly. It is finally becoming apparent that over vaccinating pets may be doing them more harm than good. Even without yearly vaccinations, it's still important that your dogs go to the vet yearly for a physical and bloodwork. Little things can turn into major health issues if not caught early. Your dogs need yearly heartworm tests, too. Trying to save money by skipping vet visits can often end up costing you more in the long run - not only in vet bills, but in the health of your dog. |
Exactly, several vets agree that annual vaccinations can do more harm that good (they can actually get a healthy dog sick) and that, just as us, they don’t need them either cause their immune system has a memory (just as ours do) and doesn’t need any reminders. According to this group of vaccine retractors the only reason for which vets still keep recommending them is to lure us into their offices. I give my own shots to my puppies and adults. I only do the adults every 3 years and the puppies get a series of 3 shots and a yearly booster. Its very easy to do and the puppies arent exposed to all the sick germs present at the vet office. Plus, its much less expensive and stressful than going to the vet. I use Vanguard 5 without Lepto. The only shots I do get from the vet is rabies. Disposal of the syringes is easy also. Just put them in an empty milk carton and seal it shut. I have to give myself a shot every night so I have lots of syringes to throw away.LOL |
We don't do yearly shots, but we of course keep up with rabies. The yearly shots are extremely hard on thier systems, and research has shown they have immunity to the diseases for many, many years past one. Just a thought. |
