Heartgard and DeWorm
 
Hi Guys,

I was told once by one of the pet shop that if I give Heartgard to my puppy, I do not need to give deworming pills. Is that true?

As i am really doubtful that why people still buy deworm pills since they can get 2 in 1 effect with heartgard?

Please help, I am confused as my puppy is already 7 months and it has only dewormed in the earlier stages of vaccination and never since.

Please if i need to supply deworm pills, what is a good brand suggested?

heartguard plus and interceptor both have dewormers in them for rounds, hooks, and whips i believe. i'd just use either of these heartworm medications and not worry about giving a regular dewormer. Also, you do not need to deworm your dog unless they actually have worms. No sense in giving meds for something they don't have. also at your pups yearly check up bring in a poop sample for them to check.

but if i plan to play on the safe side to feed deworm pills as suggested 3 months once, will it affect the pup's health if they have no worms inside?

you never know. it could be perfectly safe but why give your pet medication it does not need? i don't think i'd call it playing it safe by deworming every few months. its honestly just not needed. instead of deworming why not just give a heartworm pill with the dewormer already in it, or bring a stool sample to the vet every couple months if your that worried? i don't give my dog dewormers. she gets interceptor once a month from april thru november and she's never had any worms (not counting what she came with from the breeder's house).

I think your idea of bringing the poopoo is something new and i think i will try that =)

Regular Heartgard is Ivermectin. Heartgard Plus adds Pyrantel (a dewormer) for all the other worms. So when you give Heartgard Plus, you are giving an unnecesary ingredient. Dogs don't need to be dewormed once a month.

Interceptor is milbemycin. This kills heartworm larvae and controls or kills other worms.

I use Interceptor but see no problem with regular Heartgard. I like the fact that Interceptor deals with worms without extra ingredients but this is just a bonus and isn't necessary. I would not use Heartgard Plus if I didn't have to.

It is very important for your vet to do a fecal atleast once a year.
