Raw Bones? I could probably find the answer on here somewhere but I'm just exhausted so thought I'd take the lazy way out! I'm curious to know about giving raw bones..... I don't feed a raw diet as I just haven't done enough research to even know whether it's for us or where to start... but I do like the idea of giving raw bones... but, what kind will not harm them, yet be healthy for their teeth? Also, is there any "prep work" I need to know about with the bones themselves? Gracie's earlier "monster mouth" is improving and she's lost quite a few of her baby teeth now.... she's really not a HUGE "chewer" - - she sticks to her toys - but prefers the soft-bodied toys to the rubber or more solid ones - and doesn't care much for the bully stick type products.... Any suggestions re: giving raw bones? Thanks! |
I have only given raw bones to Lacy twice. She did really well on them. I recommend trying them. I gave Lacy raw chicken necks. I cut the excess skin off of them...it took her 30-45 minutes to eat one. lara2913 and abbie's mom both feed their yorkies a prey-model raw diet and can probably give you some great advice on where to start. It's recommended to freeze the bones before thawing them out to kill bacteria. |
I buy raw lamb shank bones for my two from a specialty meat shop. The bones have a little meat still on them and they aren't too big for the girls. But they are a little more expensive than beef bones so the girls only get a bone once a week .I also feed my two the raw diet. Eileen |
how about recreational raw bones? Which bones would be good for healthy teeth? |
SoCo gets (for bones) mainly turkey and chicken wings, breasts and legs. Usually he eats every bite except for the legs - those he tends to suck the marrow out of. Then he either crunches them into little pieces and leaves in fun places for Mommy and Daddy to walk/sit on or he stops when they're just to big to finish and they become toys for him to throw around... lol ETA: He gets the bones with the skin and meat attached, I don't give JUST the stripped bone. |
