Is this food worth the risk? My chloe HATES dog food. She barely eats the NV premade. I asked the retailer for a few samples and the one my Chloe LOVED was Innova EVO. She eats it happily but..the protien levels. Ive done alot of research and weather its true or not that the protien can hurt her kidneys I worry. I need to keep her grainless and that cuts so much food out for us. I was so hoping that raw would be the answer but its not to be. Im at my wits end. I want Chloe to eat happily and not get sick and it just seems so hard. Should I risk the high protien or keep searching? We know for sure shes allergic to corn, wheat, potatos,venison and possibly bison. Maybe allergic is not the right word. She get violently sick from it or her face swells up and the hair on her face falls out. Shes also had 2 pancreatius(sp) attacks. HELP! |
Hmmm...I'm not the best person regarding the pancreatitis concern - but wouldn't higher protein be risky for that? Yorkieluv is great w/ this subject, hopefully she'll chime in. Otherwise, I think EVO is a great food and I'm comfortable w/ higher protein foods - but that's me. You'd want to be sure she stays hydrated though if you're feeding straight, higher protein kibble (dry only). What you could do, to both "cut" the protein (if that continues to be a concern) and add moisture, is add things to the kibble - like veggie (steamed/pureed) or something. |
I just got a couple sample bags too. What I'm doing is mixing it with something else not as high in protein & then adding water. I was vacationing in Sarasota last week & asked at a pet store that carried the EVO & the owner told me he did have yorkie owners who feed EVO with no problems. I wonder if weight has anything to do with the problems that can arise. Mine are on the small side, Roxy is 3 1/4 lbs, Bubba is 4 1/2 lbs - they are both 6 yrs old. I'm just afraid that being small might mean they could have more problems with too high of protein. Does anyone feed strictly EVO to their yorkie? I was told by a local pet store that this is the very best food - ok, subjective I know. |
I feed strictly evo to my dogs and have had good success with it. I add alot of water to their food when I do feed it to them to help with the protein and breaking down the food. The only problem I have had was my Mimi getting a little chunky. |

I don't like the idea of feeding high protein, grain-free dry foods - I would feed canned version of the foods. Evo makes canned food, as does Wellness, and Nature's Variety that are grain free and high in protein. I think it's so important to have a lot of moisture in a high protein diet...it's just not natural or healthy to a dog's digestive system to have a diet that lacks any moisture. I would try the canned Evo |
