New Yorkie Owner Can Anyone Help ! Hi I have a 11 week old yorkshire terrier, i dont know whether to be worried or not but she has been asleep for the last seven hours, she hasnt really woke up for her tea i put her on my knee and she wasnt bothered she just wanted to go back to sleep in her bed, i dont know whether she is over tired I had her in the back garden today for about 30 mins and all she did was run round, she has had her needles, and while she was out she got covered in mud so i bathed her and she has been asleep ever since, i really dont know much exercise a dog of her size should have, so has anyone got any advice to offer, as soon as they could if they wouldnt mind because i know am probably not going to get much sleep tonight because of worrying about her. Thanks |
i hope your not giving her People tea Thats not good for her i would give her some nutri-cal http://www.bullwrinkle.com/ShoppingP..._nutri-cal.htm a puppy that young shouldnt play to much it can get low blood sugar |
so do you think she's just tired, she did eat a lot of her dinner that was after she played, i havnt got any nutri-cal so ill put a dab of sugar in her drinking bowl, i do hear her getting up for a drink. Thanks for info |
Does she seem lethargic at all? If so, then she needs to get to a vet. Yorkie puppies should be offered several small meals per day so that they don't go through a hypoglycemic episode. Those can become quite scary...You can give her a tiny bit of honey if you have no nutri-cal. |
If she's been sleeping for seven hours and you can't wake her, she's probably hypoglycemic. Try to get some sugar on her tongue or gums asap - pancake syrup, Karo syrup, jam, etc. Then you need to take her to your vet as quickly as possible since she's been out for so long. Here is some information: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body...oglycemia.html |
I would strongly recommend an immediate appointment with the vet or emergency clinic if you cannot get an appointment right away. We send our best wishes for a speedy recovery! |
I agree! get her to a vet immediately especially if the puppy is under 2lbs. Don't mean to scare you, but it happened with me and it was very scary. Good luck |
Just to let you all know she's fine this morning, couldnt get her to a vet as it was late when i posted message, she woke up about an hour ago full of beans, so fed her breakfast, burns food mixed with cat milk and she gobbled the lot, now she's fast asleep, and now am going catch up on a few winks, they arent half a worry.....thanks for everyone's advice....:) |
and her weight is 1 kg, which is about 2.2 1lbs she is putting on weight, she was 0.8kg on 6th December then 1kg on 21st December... i have to take her to the vet to weigh her because I have no scales that will weigh her... |
I hope she is doing better now. Perhaps she was just a tired little puppy and needed her rest. But, as others have said, it is always good to have Nutri-Cal on hand. Please keep us posted. these little scamps sure do keep us worried when they do something out of the norm. And she is a tiny little furbaby. |
I tried to get some nutra-cal in before she came to us just in case but when I rang my vet they said they only prescribe it, and to have it she would have to be really bad, apparently too much can cause seizures in these little dogs, but when we got her the first night she never ate or drank so i was just advised to put sugar in her mouth or honey, but as i say she's fine now making up for not having any food yesterday she's hounding me for more, more than usually and she's getting spoilt. |
So glad she is doing better. Although she is eating and feeling better keep this on hand. This lady is deceased but was a well known breeder of yorkies for many years. http://www.shooterdog.com/alexfaq3.htm Do keep us posted as to how she is doing. |
