Fleas/Dawn dish detergent? Tricksie has fleas again and she never goes in the yard. We have a large home and a big screened in pool with all ceramic tile, how does she get them? Advantage didn't work, switched to Frontline and it helped for a while. It has been awfully dry here and it has been less than 3 weeks that I put Frontline on her. We get a Farmer's magazine and it said to use Dawn dish detergent. Has anyone tried it? I know that I will have to put the conditioner and moisturizer on to keep it from drying her skin. :( |
Yes I have used it and it works |
Fleas can come in through screens or even be carried in on your pant legs. Since you are in Florida, it's a year round problem. Dawn will kill the live fleas that are on her which are only about 5% of the fleas, unfortunately, if they are in your house. Most are flea eggs and larvae that live in your carpeting. Mix it 50/50 Dawn and water and put it on a dry dog, then lather. Leave the lather on as long as possible, then rinse. If you think this is a brand new infestation, get a Capstar pill from your vet. It will kill the live fleas and sterilize any eggs. If they continue to be a problem, you may have to treat your carpet. I swear by Adams carpet powder. It's hard to find (it has to be the powder, not the spray so you can work it down into the carpet). I know other people who swear by 20 Mule Team Borax. |
If I were you, I would treat the carpet either of the products that Ladymom mentioned. You can sprinkle the 20 Mule Team Borax all over your carpets and let it sit for a few hours. At some point while the borax is on your carpets, bathe your baby in the regular dawn dish soap and let it sit for a few minutes. This will kill the fleas that are on her. Condition, then dry her hair. After the borax sits on your carpet for a few hours, vacuum everything up really well. Then you can let your baby back on the carpet. Do not allow her to sniff the borax or ingest it. |
Fleas/Dawn I do appreciate your advise. My house is ceramic tile except in the bedroom, and she is not in that room except at night. I would think that if they were in the carpet that they would jump on me. "To bath we go with Dawn" 50/50. Thanks again, Donna |
fleas: the bane of my existence! I have been online regarding the flea problem before and the Dawn was suggested: "original Dawn". Well, there are many types of Dawn - with bleach, OXY, hand conditioners, foam etc., but no more "original". The closest is "ultra", which I guess is just a concentrated form of the original, so the 50/50 mix I guess is for the ultra? I thought we had the problem licked but this morning yet another flea jumped on me from Sargie. I never could find the Adams powder, so thanks for the 20 Mule Team advice - first I've seen this advice. Easy to find, cheap and since borax kills other insects I'm sure it works. Hope this is the answer I'm looking for. I used Sargent's Natural Spray (a mix of eucalyptus and clove oils which evidently works, and can be sprayed on upholstery and curtains as well as carpets and doesn't stain - but it doesn't smell as pleasant as you think eucalyptus and clove would, and evidently didn't get all of them) and insecticides on the carpets but he has to be getting them from there. Be thankful that they haven't "jumped on [you]" - I had horrible flea bites on my legs (from the sofa) a couple of months ago. Evidently fleas, like mosquitos, go more for certain people than others. Someone told me that the fleas in her house bothered no one except her young son, who was plagued (while the other young son was unscathed). You're lucky if they don't like you! |
if you have a dollar general they still carry the original dawn |
dollar general Dollar General is Family Dollar here, but when I checked they didn't have it..only the fancy-schmancy derivatives. I have checked the Target, Wal-Mart, supermarkets and dollar stores - if they have Dawn, they don't have the original. Strange, huh? |
Do You Have A Dollar Tree They May Have It |
Fleas/Dawn I just gave Tricksie a bath in the "Dawn Orginal", and put Mane n Tail Conditioner/Moisterizer on her. We will see if it takes care of the problem. |
Nope! I tried Dollar Tree - we have a huge one - no luck there either! |
Do You Have Old Hardware Store Or Old Drugstore Or Even Old Grocery Store Near By. |
Fleas/Dawn 2 Attachment(s) I found the original at Winn Dixie. Today, no fleas but she only had a few. Last year my husband brought home an abandoned Austrialian Sheppard and put him in the garage, WELL, when I walked in there the fleas jumped all over me and they do bite. We had an awful time getting rid of them. I bought Raid Flea Bomber in the purple can, safe for animals but you have to wait 24 hours and air it out. It worked and has a nice scent. I love all the advice you all give. ;) |
flea help I like everything petco has BUT I like to kill them dead with these spa products (cuter and more friendly...): www.happytails.com or boutiques flea the scene and then fur better (to keep them from getting dry skin) good luck! |

Wal mart I found original Dawn at Wal Mart. It wasn't easy to find though. It was on like the bottom shelf stuck in the back. It worked like a charm on Lola. |
still no luck Nope, have no old hardware store or the like nearby...all have closed. Very strange - if they still make the original, I don't know why I can't buy it anywhere here. I did think that a store like Family Dollar would have it, but maybe here in the northeast they don't think it will sell?!! |
Fleas/Dawn I can buy some an send to you if you want? Just PM me with your address. Donna |
i had to use the dawn original last night on Cody.. cause he had 2 fleas the day before. it didn't kill them today i found 3 more. i guess i didnt do it right. i just read you have to mix the dawn 50.50 and i didnt... im going first thing in the morning to the vet for advantage they werent open yesterday. |
Tricksie didn't have any for two days, today I found 2 fleas but I can't put advantage on her until the 14th because I used it Dec. 14. I am afraid to use it more often, but on the box it says you can use it more often for lice. |

As for the frontline plaus. Are you buing it from your veterinarian or getting it from a pet store or online? I don't know how true this is, but I have read that if you do not get it from your verteinarian, that it might be old and has lost it potency. I have always had good luck with Frontline plus, purchased from my vet. |
I purchase Frontline from the Vet. I check every inch of her skin but see no bites. Thanks. Happy New Year to everyone while we chat about fleas. |
Hallelujah, Eureka, I found it! I finally found the original Dawn in another Wal-Mart. Not even hidden, prominently displayed near the Ultra Dawn and Dawn with Whatevers. Thanks for your kind offer to send it. I haven't used it yet, but since the Proticall I use from the vet doesn't seem to prevent reinfestation or even kill the things, I am glad there's something else. I put the 20 Mule Team in the carpets but evidently didn't leave it there long enough - people are saying 24 hours??? I am beginning to think I will never, ever get rid of these fleas! All power to Dawn original! Sargie and CAS |
I am glad you found it. It worked for me one time when Chachi had fleas. Be sure to condition the coat well after using it because the dawn can dry the coat out |
It did not work for me and Tricksie is NEVER in the yard and I have no fleas in the house, I find 2 or 3 on her every day. |
My husband (who sells auto parts) sells a product called The Scrubber. It is all natural, biodegradable with NO phosphates. It is made from Oranges. I was told to try some on my dogs. Well fleas are gone, dogs smell great and best thing is it is good for so much more. If you have a bee sting, a burn, apply some and it goods so well. I swear by this product! You can even clean your laundry!:D |
I heard the blue dawn was the best for fleas, i tried it with my Pit Bull when he was 6 weeks and it worked great. |

Info from my vet: Our Recommended Flea Program: You must treat your pets, house and yard! First is to give ALL your pets a capstar tablet once weekly. This will kill all adult fleas on your pet at that time. This tablet only lasts for 24 hours. ALL pets, indoor and outdoor, need to be given this tablet weekly. Next step is to apply a topical flea prevention. The over the counter medications are not as effective as veterinary based products. Our recommendations are the Frontline products or the Advantage products. During the flea season or your flea problem we recommend to apply Frontline every 3 weeks. This product that you use must be applied to ALL pets, indoor and outdoor. Once you have applied your topical prevention it is best to spray your pets as needed, each time you see a flea with Ovitrol spray. This spray can be used as a light mist any time you may see a flea on your pet . It is not necessary to saturate your pet with this product. Now it's time to treat your house! We recommend to purchase Ecktokyl House Spray. Prior to spraying your carpets, vacuum first and immediately take the vacuum bag outside and to the trash. DO NOT KEEP IN YOUR HOUSE! This bag will contain flea eggs, larvae and even some adults! Once your bag is safely outdoors, begin spraying the areas that your pets have contact with. Carpets, beddings, furniture, etc. Finally, it's time to treat the yard! We recommend to treat with a product called Diatomaceous Earth ("D.E."). This product kills the soft-bodied larvae and is non-toxic to our pet friends. Once you have completed the above, you must maintain all your pets on a monthly flea prevention to help keep your environment flea free! |
Flea/Dawn dish detergent I have tried Advantage and Frontline, our home has tile floors except in the bedrooms. Tricksie never runs in the yard but she still got a few fleas. Took her to the Vet today and they put her Comfortis, a pill to take once a month. |
