Yorkie with Doggie Breath! Hi All! I got a new Yorkie on Sunday - Diamond N The Ruff. Diamond is rather small and playful but she has really bad breath! She keeps trying to kiss me! I heard there was something I could put in her water? I have been brushing her teeth, but she still has the problem! Any suggestions and advice are appreciated!:p |
I would suggest brushing her teeth or giving her breath fighting treats. Also, try some liquid oral care. You add a capful to their water and it fights plaque and bad breath. I use it with ours and found it works wonders. |
Thanks - what are some names of liquid oral care? I couldn't find anything at Petsmart. So far - she's not interested in any of the dental treats! |

I would also make sure to have your vet look at her teeth. In many cases bad breath is a sign of rotten teeth or gum disease. I am sure you know but Yorkies are very prone to bad teeth. Actually I am assuming (always bad) that this is an older dog. If this is a puppy - how old? |
I'm thinking of switching to a raw diet that a lot of people are recommending and someone said that their breath would smell better and that it's good for their teeth. Maybe that would help? But I think I would make sure your baby is healthy first and get a good check up by the vet and ask them if there is anything to be concerned about. Good Luck! |
Probably the food - I would go to www.halopets.com. We've got three yorkies and I've been feeding them the Spot's Stew - both canned and homemade, no dry at all. Breath is a LOT better - just a suggestions. Twupsmom Md |
Try the Suzie's Tartar Control liquid to mix in with the water, also PetsLife gel. Both work great. Neither of my dogs (or cats) have bad breath. http://www.suziestartarliquid.com/ |
A few things: -diet? and if that fails I would certainly ask my vet (it could be an internal problem) but if she is like Barney (who hates a teeth brushing session) just spray a oittle Dog Smog her way (www.happytails.com)- it is awesome:) |
bad breath My little ZsaZsa had the same problem, bad breath. Ooooh it was like she had been in the toilet bowl. I took her to the Vet and she stated that my little baby had not lost her puppy canine teeth and that food or hair can build up there. She gave me an antiobiotic for her. I brushed her teeth often and would slightly play with those teeth to loosen them. One of them has already fallen out and I can tell a big difference already. Some Vets remove the teeth themselves but they put them to sleep and the anesthesia can be dangerous to a 3 lb yorkie. Use your own judgement and talk to your Vet. This may be part of your dogs problem too. I hope this helps. :D |
1 Attachment(s) Virbac Animal Health C.E.T. AquaDent Drinking Water Additive is the BEST I have found - I tried the ones from Petco & Petsmart - they don't even come close to this Product! My Vet suggested it to us & he sells it there at his office! It reads to add 2 teaspoons to a quart. i add about 1/2 teaspoon to their lil bowl of water. http://www.cetdental.com/ |

My puppy had bad breath at first, but she wasn't well cared for until I got her. I personally think it is also from the digestive tract as well as just the food and plaque. I give her a teaspoon of yogurt with her dry food every morning and it actually stopped the problem…now she has no breath odor, lol. |
Yayyy! So glad the problem was solved and also so glad to be informed about the xylitol in the aquadent! WHo woulda thunk a company that makes " Doggy" products would be so irresponsible about ingredients! |
Really bad breath can indicate a systemic problem or more likely, bacteria growing and clinging to dental plaque under the gumline. A vet visit for a check of her gums and teeth should be able to tell you if she's in need of a professional dental cleaning, where the vet scrapes under the edge of the gumline and cleans the teeth of dental plaque and beginning dark spots which can turn into caries. I had a dog once who had bad breath and before long had blood on his muzzle. Turns out he had a tooth that had abscessed through his upper lip that had to be pulled. After that, it was bi-annual visits to the vet for dental checks, tooth brushing and yearly cleanings by a professional. Bad breath was gone after the professional cleaning. If you don't get a vet to check her teeth and gums and she is forming caries and pus pockets and worse, she could wind up in a lot of pain from infection/abscess, losing teeth and the ability to eat and defend herself normally. Many Yorkies are genetically predisposed to poor dental health and if you will Google the phrase "Yorkie dental problems" and Google Image the same, you will see examples of what a Yorkie's gums and teeth can get into without proper care. https://www.google.com/webhp?sourcei...tal%20problems https://www.google.com/search?q=York...YQ_AUoAQ&dpr=1 |
