I hope my pup is not sick! Hello everyone, I am not only new to this forum but also a new Yorkie mommy! I have always had Great Danes but a recently got my first yorkie as an X-mas present from my boyfriend. Her name is Shirley and she just turned 4 months december 21st. Now she was a little shy when I first met her at the breeders but she crawled on my lap and fell asleep. The first couple of days she slept all day and didn't play at all. I thought this was normal however her stool was fine, no diarrhea at all. Its been 5 days and she still sleeps almost all day, also she comes out of my room and goes under the table and just sits there. She is starting to play, but only plays for like 15 minutes max until she lays down again. I hope she isn't sick, and is just calm. She is so cute and doesn't like to be away from her mommy (me ;) ) but she doesn't show me a lot of affection. She seems to only lick when there is some sort of residue on my fingers. Is this because she is sick, or because its a new environment, or will she always be this way? |
This is perfectly normal behavior for a puppy. They spend a lot of time sleeping, and your lucky you have already gotten her to play with her toys. Welcome to YT. |
Thank you so much for welcoming me. I have just been so worried, I want to give her the best life and I want to make her happy. I wouldn't say she was shy, but she is just not as affectionate as I have seen other yorkies be, she doesn't jump up or lick incesantly. lol. She comes out of the room and explores like a brave puppy, but will sometimes walk fast in the other direction when someone walks toward her. Is your opinion that she will stay quiet like this her whole life? |
If she's sleeping all the time, it's not normal. Puppies do sleep but they are also very playful when they are awake. Dogs have different personalities, but if it seems like your baby is lethargic at all, I wouldn't take any chances. |
I also have a puppy (14 weeks) and she sleeps a lot but also plays a lot when she’s awake, she runs, jumps and bites the whole time and plays with all of her toys and her older sis (our cocker) and ends up exhausted, then she sleeps like and our or two and is up like new again. At night she is sleeping 6 straight hours and she is like a Tasmanian devil when she wakes up at 6 am! Lol, I cant put up with her yet. I also don’t think its normal for your baby to sleep ALL the time, imo normal puppies are playful and happy even thought they sleep like 15-18 hours a day. Is she eating well? |
Has she been checked by your vet? If she didn't get much socialization as a puppy, that could explain her lack of affection and hiding under the bed. Puppies need lots of human contact in those early weeks to be properly socialized. If she was raised in a kennel and not handled enough, that could explain her behavior. |
Hi and welcome to yt:) congrats on your new babie, would love a pic:) |
She is still VERY much a baby. When we first brought Chip home he slept 3/4 the time. He didn't know what to do with toys. As she gets older and becomes more and more comfortable with her surroundings, you will see why most of us call our babies yorkshire TERRORS lol |
Welcome to YT! |
she is doing much better she is playing a lot more, I am getting her checked by a vet, however the breeder said the parents were very calm as well. the breeder had kids and so the puppy was handled a lot. She is not lethargic just lays down when i lay down. One thing was the breeder accidently gave me some of the food they were eating and I think she gave me the adult instead of the puppy, I don't know if that would have anything to do with her energy levels tho. |
It wont be long and she will be zooming all over the house!!! :) |
