Lepto ??? I read on another website that Lepto was not a safe vaccine for Yorkies, as it was too painful for them. but just last week, my Vet advised that I should not bypass this vaccine on my dog, as this was a disease that could be passed onto humans, and tonight I just saw it on the news, that this was the case in Dallas, being passed onto humans, and causing liver problems. Did most of you on here get the Lepto vaccine for your dog ? Thanks for your help :) |
I just took reagan in monday, & asked my vet did she really need the lepto & he told me yes- he said our area was really bad with it & she would def need it. She did fine, no reactions or anything. |
Lacy was vaccinated for Lepto when she was a puppy and at a year old. She had no problems from it. It is not a core vaccine like rabies, parvo, and distemper so it's not necessary for every dog. If you live in an area where Lepto cases have been reported or travel to an area with Lepto. your vet will probably advise you to get the vaccine. |
I can't tell you if you should get the vaccine because I don't know your dog or lifestyle. It is not a major problem in Texas (compared to other areas). It is a very big problem here in Michigan and Ellie's vet office recommends it for all dogs. This isn't not a good policy though. Ellie had a serious reaction to it (common in Yorkies) and I could've lost her. Some vets won't give it to dogs less than 10 pounds. This is between you and your vet but I would look at how big of a problem the disease is in Texas, if you live on a farm and if you live by slow moving water (where bacteria thrives). By the way, you are probably more likely to get lepto if you work around water or anywhere where rats urinate rather than from a pet. While getting lepto from your dog is possible, it is a very low risk. Thank you for your replies! I will think about it some more and I'll get my husband to reed this thread too. My vet recommended for us to do this shot and I was sceptical about it, but after watching news tonight with dogs and people getting sick in Dallas, I got a little concerned. :animal-pa |
Lepto shots can kill a Yorkie so I would find out if you live in an area that it is really needed. Sorry to say, I would not just trust a vet's recommendation. Vets have been giving shots for many things that a dog does not need. I feel that we need to take an active part in deciding what our little ones need. Zoey had a reaction to it. She was panting and lethargic. She seemed sick for a couple of days. Im not getting it for Chloe. |
lept! hOW OLD IS YOUR DOG?ALTHOUGH I AM AGAINST IT IF IT IS A PROBLEM IN YOUR AREA MAYBE YOU SHOULD CONSIDER IT,but AGE HAS A LOT TO DO WITH IT,I WOULD WAIT UNTIL THE PUP IS AT LEAST 6MTHS OR OLDER.THE vet gave it to my dog when I specifically told him not to and he had a reaction and he was already a year. he went in for a routine check up and he saw he had not had it and did it any way.:( :thumbdown ALSO: check up online about it like the ways it is spread and If I am correct they get it from drinking affected water like at a park or urine of a dog that is affected( mine drink nothing but the water I give and I watch them whenever we are out like a hawk). Only get the lepto vaccine if there has been an outbreak in your area or you live in a high risk area like a farm. It's not worth the possible life threatening reaction. One of the scariest things about the lepto vaccine is that they usually don't get a reaction to the first one so you can mistakenly think it is safe for your dog. It's usually the second or third shot that will cause the deadly reaction when the antibodies produced by their immune system become hypersensitive. |
Blueberry is almost 6 months old. On Christmas day she will be 6 months :) We are not living on the farm. I thought about it and probably are not going to do this shot. I am watching my baby pretty good everywhere we go, so I don't think that she will be drinking dirty water from the puddle, etc.. I do not want her to get sick from this shot! Thanks! |
Remember the news is to create sensationalism. 1 case or 2 cases is not an epidemic. Call the vet school and see what they say. LivingDustmops is correct on this. Lepto vaccine is scary. |
All of our pets have to have ALL vaccines. One of the not so great parts of living on a military base, but, I think I would get all req.vaccines anyways. |

I just took Ginger in for her last set of shots 2 weeks ago..the vet said NO, she did not need the lepto shot.. The Leptospirosis vaccine is the most common culprit of causing adverse reactions. Plus, it's very ineffective. The vaccine only protects against a couple of the many strains of the bacteria. And although it is around, it's relatively rare. Many of the more informed vets have stopped giving Lepto shots for these reasons. |
