science diet good or bad? My Vet recommends and sells science diet but I read someone mentioned it was not as good as other dry food. Will someone give me an opinon ? Thanks:) |
It's definately not the best food out there, but it's not the worst either. As with any diet/food, you have to make sure that if the food you are feeding is not providing all of the nutritional requirements that your dog needs, you include supplements in addition. All dog foods are going to market their products as being the best, vets are not always the best source of information regarding pet nutrition and everyone will have their own opinion of what is best. |
I do not like Science Diet. My dog did not do really well with it. I would never recommend it but if you want to feed it please make sure it is not preserved with ethoxyquin. There is no way that should ever be given. Have you tried Innova, Canidae, Evo, Wellness? |
I would suggest visiting the follwing site for links to helpful info on your quest to find the non-existant perfect diet: http://www.consumersearch.com/www/fa...d/reviews.html It will link you to some sites (dogfoodanalysis.com, animalark.com, dogaware.com fo name a few) that have compared various dog (and cat) foods, examined the companies that produce them and give you a brief overview of what you should know when searching for a commerical food. The links also examine raw and homecooked diets as well. Important to keep in mind though, the information on all of the sites are based on the opinions of the site editors, so take that for what it's worth. Many of them are also very one sided. They do however, mention publications that you could track down for even more info. |
I would vote :thumbdown on Science Diet - even though I used to breed and raise Bichons on it. Back when I started using it, the only place you could get it was the vet's office. I've learned :) there are much better foods out there - it is work to figure out the best food. But Science Diet causes so many allergy problems in dogs - be careful. I would look at dogfoodanalysis.com and look at the 4 and 5 star foods for your yorkie |
science diet I used science for many dogs and it was fine. Now though I have started to use Science Natural which has a lot better ingredients. Lola's stool is small, hard and does not smell using it. Best part her stomach is tolerating which she did not with royal canaan. morrislaz |

its not one of my favorite kibbles and i wouldn't give it to my dog but i know others that do use it. i know a lot of dogs that are allergic to it because of the high amounts of corn in it. |
I don't like Science Diet, and it isn't rated all that well. I think the vets get a kick back for selling it. |

They only info they get is from major corporation reps (hills, purina, eukanbua, etc). Just because this is where they get their information from does not mean they get any benefits from selling it. The hills food we sell in hospital is not marked up any more then stores mark up their food. vets do not get a huge benefit out of selling this food. Many vets do not sell hills at all because they know better. |

Purina, Waltham and Eukanuba are the only others, I believe. Fortunately, there are much better choices for nonprescription diets. |
