I never have to baby Tiah into eating unless she is expecting puppies and I have to put her back on the puppy food (which she hates). I mix 1 teaspoon of Ragu cheese sauce with a serving...she eats every little piece! I don't give her table food, only a slice of cheese now and then (unless she has puppies, then I do moderate a bit). As mentioned above, any vet will tell you that a healthy dog will not starve ittself to death. She knows exactly how long you have held out and when you give in...the little buggers sure are smart! If you want, you could try the cheese sauce and keep cutting back on it till there isn't any mixed in at all.

Same Problem
 
I have been having the same problem. My Sasha just won't eat unless I give her people food. I was just wondering: this post went up in 2005 already. In view of possible scientific discoveries, would the info in here still be relevant for today? I have heard from someone that it is better to cook for her and enrich with supplements, and better still if I feed her raw food, but she gags at anything raw.

Another question: how good is Royal Canin Exigent? Apparently it's for VERY fussy dogs?

This reminds me of the same issue I had with mine many years ago for many years until I found out he has health issues. Now that he's on appropriate diet, he never skips one meal. He usually begs me for his food now and it is the same food every day for the last 6 years so it tells me his lack of appetite is due to his underlying issues. Please be sure that your dog is healthy because a healthy dog will not skip a meal.

That’s not necessarily true. There are healthy dogs that skip meals. I have one who prefers to eat once a day most of the time and he is healthy. I agree after several missed meals though health issues should be ruled out.

Sounds like you used good judgement by having your baby evaluated for underlying health issues before just deciding that he was a picky eater.

This may not be the answer for everyone, but it certainly was in your case. Dogs have their own eating style/pattern and drastic changes can indicate underlying health issues. On the other hand an occasional missed meal may simply indicate that furkid just wasn't hungry.
