Kennel Cough Hi Everyone, I have been so busy with the new little boy that I have not had time to post his pic or give you an update. The first week went by without a hitch, he was already pad trained and was sleeping through the night! I knew that something was bound to happen because my luck just isn't that great! I woke up with Toby on Saturday morning (5am) to hear him coughing a little, almost hacking, it seemed he was trying to clear his throat. So, I took him to the vet immediately and they said he had kennel cough. They gave me an antibiotic and a cough medicine to give him. It's not Wed and he seems to be feeling better (running around and chasing his older furbrother), but his cough is still strong. Can anyone tell me how long it takes for this sickness to pass? Also, is there anything else I can do? I feel so bad for him when he's coughing so much. Thanks for your help! Meredith:confused: |
For Lucy it was almost three weeks before it was completely gone and close to a week before I noticed any difference in her cough... |

poor little guy. Layla had kennel cough... took over a month for it to completely go away. Try putting a vaporizer near where he sleeps.. this really helped Layla with her nighttime coughing! |
Make sure they treat all your fur kids. When I got Sahara she had a cough which they treated with antibiotics though there was very little relief until I insisted they treat Dennis as well, as he was also coughing. Why I had to insist still ticks me off, but thats what happened. Both of mine were sick for about 6 months because they were passing it back and forth. Still looking for a new Vet! All together it cost me $2000.00. |
Awwe your poor baby! I have no clue on how long it takes to clear up. My sister had her little poodle get it and it was a month before it was feeling back to herself. Jeter has gotten 2 sets of his puppy vaccinations and Canine Parainfluenza was included. He goes in next Thursday for another round of vaccines. |

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I called the Vet last night and she is prescribing him a different antibiotic that is having better results with her other patients! I will keep you all posted! |
Cali had it when I got her and gave it to my Pom and they had it for 3 months, but it gradually got better. But CAli and my pom both were not real healthy at the time so yours should clear up sooner. Hope he feels better soon. |
New Yorkie Owner We got our new baby when she was 9 wks old. We've had her for 2 weeks now. She has had a cough since day 1. I took her to the vet 2 day later for her shots, and I told the vet she was coughing. He checked her and determined she had kennel cough. He gave her an antibiotic and told me I could give her Robittusin DM for her cough. This is the first time I have ever delt with kennel cough, and I was looking around the internet to get more info about how long it lasts and see what I can do to help comfort her. Since I've had her she has been eating, drinking, playing, and running around chasing everyone who walks by. You can't even tell she is sick until she starts the coughing. Every morning I give her, her antibiotic then a few minutes later I'll give her some nutrical, then 30 min. later I'll give her the Robitussin. Later in the afternoon I'll give her the other dose of antibiotic, nutrical, and Robitussin. As a treat we give her a spoon or two of all natural plain yogurt. She loves it. I was told yogurt was good for dogs too. Any other advise is always helpful. |
Kennel cough is supposed to last from a week to 21 days. Lily's lasted 2 months, but I think it hung around because I was a little too quick to treat with antibiotics rather than letting it run its course. Our aunt is a vet and she said a lot of times vets give antibiotics for KC because it makes the owners feel better--since it's a viral infection the antibiotics won't treat it, but they can help it from becoming pneumonia. What worked for me was a good cough suppressant (butorphanol) that let her throat heal up, and once her throat wasn't irritated anymore, she finally quit coughing. I hope your baby feels better soon. It's horrible hearing them hack like that, isn't it? |
