Puppy food question......dry or canned?
 
I was wondering if anyone had ever heard of this kind of puppy food. It is made by DHA Gold, Maxximum (that is how it was spelled on the bag) nutrition, puppy recipe, made with chicken, rice, and lamb. It says for growing puppies free of animal fat, animal by-products, No artifical colors, flavors, or preservatives. When I first bought him they had him on Puppy Chow, and I didn't like that because I have heard that it wasn't very good for them, but I kept him on it because that is what he was used to and I didn't want to upset his tummy or cause any eating problems but I found this food yesterday and I think I will try and switch him slowly to the new stuff. It sounds like it is a good food, I just wanted to get someone elses opinion on the idea and maybe see what kinds of food some of you use.. Dry or canned, and what brand. By the way this is a dry food.. I sometimes mix his food with a little bit of canned food. But, I will stop doing that until he gets used to this new food. I think if I change him slowly and gradually he will do okay with it...

Could you please post the ingredients? I am having a hard time finding them online. It looks like Walmart sells it but there site isn't giving ingredients.

I don't know anything about that food. But in response to your subject question - Canned food is better than dry food. Dry food is overprocessed and overcooked and lacks important moisture that they need. Go with canned

Here is the ingredients to that puppy food and yes I bought it a wal-mart supercenter... Chicken, brewers rice, ground wheat, corn gluten meal, chicken meal, poultry fat preserved with mixed tocopherois (form of vit. E) lamb, dried beet pulp, natural flavors, potassium chloride, monocalcium phosphate, brewers dried yeast, salt, calcium carbonate, DHA, cholin chloride, vit. E supplement, zinc sulfate, dried egg product, ferrous sulfate, L-ascorbyl-Z polyphosphate (source of vit. C), zinc oxide, proteinated mimerals (zinc, copper, manganese) niactin, copper sulfate, vit. A supplement, biotin, manganous oxide, calcium pantothenate, vit. B-12 supplement, thiamine mononitrate (source of vit. K activity), riboflavin supplement (source of vit. B2), sodium selenite, calcium iodate, folic acid, vit. D supplement, cobalt carbonate. I really don't know what alot of that is but to me it sounds like it is good for him.. I hope I haven't started feeding it to him yet......

I wouldn't use this one. Corn and wheat are major allergens to some dogs. Corn gluten meal was involved in the massive recalls and I would wonder where this company gets theirs from (probably China since Walmart sells it). Brewers rice is just a filler. It is not the worst food ever, but I wouldn't be comfortable with it. I would go with canned also. I think it's better for them. We homecook here.

Vitamins or not.....
 
If I mixed canned food with the dry food would it be enough moisture that way and he always has access to water all day long.. I want him to have the best nutrition he can possible get but I don't want him to get over weight. He is a good size now, but he is still growing and needs alot of things. Do any of you give your babies vitamins, I saw them in the pet store and @ wal-mart yesterday, I was wondering if maybe I need to give him vitamins.. I just want what is best for him....

Canned food won't make him overweight unless you feed too much. Dry food has just as much potential to make a dog overweight as canned does. I'd give a good supplement if I fed dry or canned food...I think the cooking destroys a lot of the nutrients. I feed Lacy a raw diet, and while I don't think she really needs it, I still give her a supplement called Juice Plus for Dogs. I also give her a fish oil/Vit. E supplement
