To neuter or not Hello everyone! my beautiful Yorkie boy is about 9mos now and we haven't gotten him neutered yet. We hesitated because of how invasive a surgery might be for his tiny figure. He is a little over 3 lbs. But now he has started to pee around the legs of chairs and in random spots. I am starting to wonder if maybe I should have gotten him fixed. If anyone knows more about the benefits or non benefits of fixing your yorkie, please let me know. Thank you! |
Benifits outweigh the risks Assuming you have a vet you like and trust then he will be fine.As far as the pro's to neutering well it will prevent them from lifting thier legs but since he has already started I don't know and some never lift.My boy never lifted his leg in the house but I still got him neutered.Maybe he will stop if you neuter now but I wouldn't wait too much longer |
a neuter is the very least invasive of and surgery at the vets ofiice and i can tell you exactly how its done if you want. he will be ok as it is also one of the most routine surgerys that are done daily i DO understand your concern though |
Neutering him will make him a much better and healthier pet. You will eliminate his chance of getting certain cancers and other medical problems. If done early enough, it will stop him from starting undesirable male characteristics like marking. Since he has already started, he may or may not stop after neutering, but many do. This is a great article about all the benefits of neutering: http://www.peteducation.com/article....&articleid=911 |
I wouldn't know what to do if I had a male. With a female, the benefits of spaying outweigh the risks. I can't honestly say that with a male. If marking is an issue, neutering could help but just look at health benefits and risks. It is possible that he would have to be neutered later in life if he develops testicular cancer (does not happen often) or benign lumps (happens often) but you might be surprised if you Google what other diseases he could get if he is neutered. It is a tough call and I think you should talk to your vet about it. |
Thank you for your reply, and around how much should I expect the cost of the surgery to be? And if I have waited this long, is it still worth it to neuter him? |
If you neuter him now before the marking gets too bad then he may stop. Mine was marking and I neutered him and he stopped. I was kind of against neutering because of everything I heard but after he marked me I aid ok that's it no more. And I would do it all over again. He settled down a little he became more of a lap dog after that instead of a little terror. Don't get me wrong he can still be a little terror but not every day like before. I say do what you want but the marking will not stop if you don't but in the same token my vet told me once they start neutering may not always stop it....Good luck. |
Ellie's spay was $85 (her vet does low cost spay/neuter) and I think the e-collar was an extra $20 and pain med may have been extra. Then again, maybe they were included. Preop bloodwork runs about $100 around here. |
if you have a small dog that ANNOYS you by peeing everywhere, it's a behavioural problem not a reason to put your dog through a DANGEROUS OPERATION. |

First of all - it is not a dangerous operation. It's actually a very simple procedure. Much less invasive than spaying a female. And annoying behavior is probably something you can eliminate or make better by retraining. However, overpopulation and killing unwanted pets is preventable by neutering!!! Perhaps you should visit a animal shelter so that you can get the full impact of people not spaying or neutering their pets. If you're not a breeder, then there is absolutely no reason for you not to spay/neuter your pet. Please talk to any Vet and I am sure they'll tell you the same thing. PLEASE SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR PETS! |

Like ladymom says ... neuter! It's better for their health in the long run ... possibly curb bad habbits in the near-term ... Honestly, the only reason not to is if you're breeding. Otherwise I have not yet heard a good reason not to spay/neuter. Do it for Bob Barker! |
I don't want to debate because I really don't care if anyone decides to neuter or not to neuter. It is none of my business. I just wanted to post this link for those who think that neutering is that easy of a decision. There are definately risks and they may outweigh the benefits. Spaying obviously has more benefits then risks as far as science can tell right now. http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/LongT...uterInDogs.pdf I cannot necessarily confirm this info is correct, so lemme know if you think it's not accurate please. I am not saying I would never neuter but someone would have to give me a good reason. |
