To Spay or Not to Spay Ok. Delilah is 6 months old and I was going to spay her this month, but I just can't bring myself to make the appointment. So many people are telling me to breed her, but I just don't know anything about having puppies. I am scared about her having the surgery too. My girl maltipoo was in a lot of pain when she had her surgery almost 9 years ago. Someone talk me into the surgery, please!! |
I am happy to talk you into spaying your girl! :D Did you know that if you spay her now, before she ever comes into heat, you can all but eliminate her chance of ever getting mammary cancer? Mammary tumors are fairly common in older, unspayed female dogs and 50% are malignant. Spaying greatly reduces the chances of a female dog developing this condition. In those females spayed prior to their first heat cycle, breast cancer is very, very rare. The risk of malignant mammary tumors in dogs spayed prior to their first heat is 0.05%. It is 8% for dog spayed after one heat, and 26% in dogs spayed after their second heat. http://www.peteducation.com/article....8&articleid=46 Don't let anyone try to talk you into breeding her. If she was in a lot of pain that is very unusual. It's in your babies best interest to get spayed if your not breeding her. I would definetly go to another vet to have the spay done. Maybe you can make an appointment to just go to the vet to talk about it, and he can calm you by answering your concerns. I've hardly ever heard of problems with spaying. I think your other baby was an exception to the usual outcome. |
Definately have her spayed. Don't wait too long, because Kalina went into heat at 6 months. You want to have it done before she goes into heat. Unless she is a show dog or being bred, she really should be spayed. Good luck. I'm sure she will be fine. Puppies recover very quickly. |
Please get her spayed, you will be glad you did. My little 4 lb. Mia was spayed recently. She was a bit uncomfortable the first day, but was fine by the next day! Make sure you ask your vet for pain meds for her also. Martha |
The younger a dog is when they are spayed, the easier it normally is for them to recover. Younger puppies heal faster and don't seem to feel as much pain as older puppies and adult dogs. Spaying is the best thing you can do for your little girl. There are so many more things that can go wrong with an unspayed female and definitely when breeding her than a simple spay surgery. |
Thanks everyone! I am feeling better about spaying Delilah. I have heard of complications in toy breeds due to pregnancy and having puppies, and I definitely don't want that to happen. I guess a little discomfort for a day or two beats all! Thanks again! |
Everyone who saw Lucy the first six months said "awww...she would have such beautiful puppies". As much as I agreed, and am so green when I see a new litter of puppies on here, for me, I leave the breeding to the experts who know what they are doing and just smother my baby with enough affection for 10 puppies :) I got her spayed at 6 months and don't regret it. |
Definitely do it :) I waited and waited on McKenzie and at 9 months she came into heat and she's still all bloated and swollen and I feel terrible for waiting to make the appt. She's scheduled to go in at the end of the month :) |
I would say definitely get it done. I regret not getting Lily spayed before her first heat. I was so nervous and I held it off but now I am even more upset. It's best for the dog. |
You should spay her! It is what is best for her. As a matter of fact, Mazee was spayed about 1 1/2 weeks ago and just had her stitches removed tonight. I was near tears taking her in, but honestly I knew she would be ok and it what was best for her. I couldn't even imagine my baby having babies-nope, wouldn't want to put her thru that. I really dreaded the procedure itself, but now I am so relieved that it is over with! Totally agree with leaving the breeding to the experts. :) |
You all convinced me. I AM TAKING HER IN TOMORROW!!!!! I called and made the appointment and I am scared to death, but will be so glad when it is over! I don't think I will get much sleep tonight, but I know it is for the best. |
I definitely agree with spaying! My Border Collie\Lab cross was spayed when she was 6mths (she is 10yrs now) and she is a better dog for it. She had some discomfort for about 2 days but that is it. My friend's Yorkie was bred by accident (thought her heat was over) and I went through the whole pregnancy and birth with her. I never want to do it again!Rushing to a vet at midnight for an emergency c-section was not alot of fun, not to mention watching what the poor dog was going through! It was very frightening, even with an experienced breeder with us. My Tessa will be spayed as soon as she hits 6mths. |
I waited and waited to get LillyBelle spayed. I was so afraid of having her put to sleep. She was 1 1/2 yrs old just barely 4lbs, and had a false pregnancy, with milk and everything. So I did have her spayed. I picked her up the same day, got extra pain medicine from the vet. She did absolutely fine. And in just a few days was back to normal. |
