proin 25 for bladder Hi Guys.....last summer GiGi started having noticeable trouble with having accidents after some of this and some of that we found out that the problem is her bladder and she is now on proin. I was just wondering if anyone else has experience with this product and the urinary problem it is prescribed for. I also am trying to find out if there are any side effects from this drug. Thanks Tina |
Hi! Proin or PPA is for incontinence, but not for incontinence due to a UTI. if she has a UTI then she needs to be on an antibiotic to clear it up. The ppa isn't going to do that. PPA is used for dogs that have urinary leakage problems because the sphincter muscles are weak. |
she has been on proin for about 2 months now and it is working but I am not very informed about the drug or how it happens that the muscels become weak. My Yorkie is 5 1/2 and she is has weak muscles already? tina |

when I said urinary prob I meant leakage not UTI. Tina |
thanks at least that is some good news. Do they have to stay on it all their life or is it just for a coulple of years. In other words does it give permanent strength to the bladder or just while she is on it. btw I have only heard good things about the drug also but wanted to check it out hear. Tina |

oh! good idea...I was doing that already but I think it was too soon for that and I don't believe it is too good to do that too soon. She actually knows now that she has a booboo (my word for it). She get a little down if it happens so I keep her on a dosage that she won't have any leaks with..so far only once a week but I may have to increase dosage a little. Thanks though Tina |
Zippy has been on Proin for the past couple of years or so. His incontenence is a result of old age (15) and nerve loss from his back injury. It started with just him leaking pee when he slept or dripping it when he walked around. For a while it worked well but now he leaks so much he wears a diaper all the time. We tried to increase his dosage but he started throwing up from the increase. He's allways had a sensitive stomach, and is on other medication so it wasn't a surprise that he threw up. |
I am sorry to hear that the Proin didn't do the whole trick for him. At least at his age a diapper is not an unusual thing although I still feel for him. How much was he on at first....right now I give GiGi 1/8 tablet once a week. I am still in the process of adjusting tothe right amount. She is doing well on it but with this amount so far about once a month she has a tiny accident. She ahs been on it since early September. At first the vet had her 1/8 tablet 2x a week and said to adjust as needed if ithis medication worked and it did. At first she did so well I took her off it all together...she was good for a week and a half....so I went to 1/8 tablet per week because I didn't want to stress her and felt I was doing more harm than good not giving "enough" med. How old is he now? I hope he is doing well...diapers are not so horrible;) Tina |
Bernie's on Proin. He loves his twice daily treat;) . He still has to wear a belly band for a little leakage, but it has greatly improved his situation. Awhile back we ran out, and I thought, "let's see if he still needs it". Boy, does he still need it. It has really done the trick for him. I know of no long term side effects and haven't notice any difference in Bernie when he's on it (except drier belly bands). Good luck! |

1/8 tablet once a week? your getting off easy there! LOL |
We have a 13 year old Border Collie mix who has been on Proin for 4 years... and lemme' tell ya'... without it, we would LITERALLY be FLOODED out of our home!!! lol The poor ol' lady just doesn't have the muscle strength she used to and she doesn't even realize when the bladder lets go.... (and at 80 lbs... it's not like a 3 lb Yorkie puddle, lol) - - The Proin has been a life saver for us!!! (AND our floors!!!) She doesn't like to take it, so it's a bit of a struggle, even now, to get the pills down her twice a day - but we haven't noticed any side effects with her at all... She's a much happier, drier girl!! I wouldn't be without it! |
Thanks everyone....the vet gives good advise but the best comes from here;) Tina |
