Spaying my Puppy When is too early to spay my puppy? My vet is wanting to do so now (Precious is only 10 weeks old) and Im not so ready for that just yet. I do intend on spaying her simply for the fact that she is a inside dog, and we have light colored carpets (you see where that was going LOL). Anyway, if anyone knows a better time to have her spayed it would be oh so helpfull. Oh yeah, does spaying calm them down any? I know she will be sore, but she is all over the place now! Its like the terrible two's for a human baby! LOL. |
I'm sure you will get a lot of knowledgeble responses from others...I did not have Lucy spayed until she was 7 months. I wanted her to have some weight on her but also have it done before she went in to first heat. She did really well. I have never heard of spaying at 10 weeks. |
Usually six months... It can be done earlier but 10 weeks is way too early in my opinion. I wouldn't wait longer than six months because you run the risk of her going into heat. |
I've always been told around 6 months too...at that time you can also have any puppy teeth pulled that haven't come out on their own...that way she only has to be put under one time. |

Thank you Thanks for the responses. I assumed 10 weeks was way too early. My vet must be needing to make some extra money, I mean I see the major concensus is about 6mths old, so how he gathered 10 weeks is beyond me. Thanks again JIM & Precious |

There are a lot of vets that do early spaying and neutering. My youngest cat's breeder normally has her kittens spayed at 10 weeks (as long as they are over 2lbs)...mine was spayed around 16 weeks though because the breeder had some health issues that prevented her from taking her to the vet earlier. I know several vets that will spay and neuter starting at 16 weeks, but there are still vets that like to stick the the old traditional "6 months" rule. Personally, if it were MY dog, I'd get a male neutered ASAP - somewhere between 10 and 16 weeks..just as soon as I could LOL. But for a female I would probably do it between 4 and 5 months so there would be absolutely no chance of her going into heat before she was spayed. I HIGHLY doubt your vet is recommendng the spay because he needs the money...he can make just as much money off of you when your dog is older, and most vets charge even more after they go into their first heat. |
