Help! Puppy still coughing!!!! We got Yoda when he was 8 weeks! Around 9 weeks, he started coughing. He has had three different antiobiotics. He just finished his last one this am. He is still coughing!!!!!!!!!! The vet has mentioned kennel cough, cold, tonsilitis, and pneumonia. They are not sure what it is. Has anyone had a dog to cough for this long? I am frustated that he can not get well!!!! :( |
Connor went through this same thing for 3 months! And finally he got better after trying several antibiotics. So hang in there. It does get better. Those coughs can be really stubborn. Another thing we did was buy a soft cat bed (totally enclosed with a hole for an entry) to keep any breeze from a fan off him at night. That's when he really started getting better and he loved the bed. We put it between our pillows so I could keep an eye on him. (Get one that will go in the washer and dryer so you can keep it clean.) I got Connor's at Walmart. Good luck. And keep us posted. |
Do you remember what antiobiotic Connor was taking when he finally quit coughing? Did he have any other symptoms? What was he diagnosed with? |
I dont' remember the antibiotic, as it was 3 years ago. He definitely had a bad case of kennel cough. He was coughing horribly. It would wake us up a night. There were times I thought he wasn't going to pull out of it, but he did. I'll try to contact my vet sometime today and see if they have a record of the antibiotic that finally worked. Of course, it may not do the same for your baby as each one is different. But it's worth a try. I'll see what I can do. I know he started sleeping better through the night when we got him the bed. It seemed any breeze at all in the house made it worse. Kind of like a child with a cough. We turned the little opening in the bed towards our headboard to ensure that no breeze at all hit him at night. I promise you, kennel cough is bad and really hard to treat. But it does get better. Sometimes it just takes longer. And we are deligent about keeping him up-to-date on his kennel cough vaccination every 6 mos. I don't ever want him to go through that again. |
Oh, and kennel cough is contagious to other dogs so be careful about exposing him to any of your friends pets. |
