Over weight Hello, I am new to this site and have owned a yorkie for 4 years. I got Snicker Doodle at a local pet store when he was 3 months old and weighed 2.3 pounds. I asked how much he would weigh full grown and they said Snickers was small and would be no more than 6 or 7 pounds. Snickers is now 4 years old and I took him for his annual check up and he was up to 12 pounds. The vet told me that I need to limit his food to 2.5 cups a day and not free feed him. The only problem is that I have a miniature poodle and they both are used to eating whenever they want, so it's hard to put them on a daily routine. I have noticed that when Snickers gets stressed out he will pace and eat his dry food pebbles... I should say he swallows his food whole. Does anyone have any idea on how I can monitor my dog's food and make sure both my yorkie and poodle are eating enough and not too much? |
Your vet estimated correct in what Snickers should weigh as an adult....is he really that much overweight? I can't tell from the picture in you avatar. Do you have another pic of him that you could post? Just curious if he is that much overweight or just grew bigger than we'd have thought. Anyway, I'm kind of in the same boat as you. My little male is probably a pound or two overweight and getting it off of him is harder than I would have expected. I try to feed him "diet" dog food, but he finds ways to sneak into my other yorkies' food dish too. So, guess I'll watch for other suggestions along with you. Good luck with Snickers' diet. |
Wow! 2.5cups even for a 12lb dog seem like a TON of food:confused: Wen I feed Lacy kibble, she only got 1/2 cup a day and she is 7lbs |
1 Attachment(s) I guess since I was originally free-feeding him I can't just cut his food back. I am guessing it's a gradual thing. He doesn't seem to be eating as frequently, but he still likes to eat at night which I was told he shouldn't do. But it's so hard for me to take his food away when he looks at his empty dog bowl... sometimes I have to give him a few kernels so I don't feel so bad. Here is a picture of Snicker Doodle at the beach. |
He sure is a cutie pie:aimeeyork |
My Moose is 12# 6 oz. He get 2/3 cup of kibble daily. 2 1/2 cups seems like an awful lot:rolleyes: . Welcome to YT. :animal-pa |

So I just went back to look at Snickers' vet record to make sure my numbers were correct. The vet said to give both dogs 1.5cups a day which is a total of 3 cups a day. I'm sorry. That's my fault!! My poodle, Timber weighs no more than 5 pounds and eats a lot. On the other hand, Snickers weighs 12 pounds and eats very little so I want to make sure that Timber isn't eating all of Snickers' food. It's so hard to monitor and play food-watcher. |
If you feel bad taking the food away, try exercising them more, i could never take food away from my dogs either, my Harley is 12 lbs, and my girl is 5 lbs, and they are spoiled, they always have treats in there bowls and always have food too, i would try taking them out more, see if that helps, or change there dog food, i still can't believe they make diet dog food but they do, i can't remember the name of it but i saw it a feed store.. |
Snickers actually gets a lot of exercise. My boyfriend and I let them run around the back yard and my poodle and him often play together. They have this exercise of running up and down the stairs and chase each other. My poodle is so little and eats the most. Snickers is big and eats very little... how does this work!? lol. |
