How do you care for a Yorkie with a cold Hi I am the new owner of a darling little rescue Yorkie. She has been sneezing a bit and I am wondering if she is getting a cold. How you care for a Yorkie with a cold? Is there any special food or vitamins I should give her? Should I keep her very quiet and not take her out for a walk until she is better. She is sleeping a bit more than usual. She is still eating well, but not quite so keen on playing at the moment. Any advice would be gratefully received. Luv Franceen |
You need to take her to your vet and get her checked. She probably needs a prescription for antibiotics. Did you adopt her from a rescue group? You should have a record of all her shots. Bring that with you so your new vet has everything on file. |
Thank you for your reply, Ladymom. I am not sure if she has a cold but she is sneezing every so often. Otherwise apart from being a little more tired than usual, she is fine. Must she have antibiotics if she has a slight cold? Yes, I was given a folder with all her records - the shots she has had etc. If you feel she should go to the vet at this early stage of a cold, then I will take her. Luv Franceen |
Dogs don't usually get colds like we do. More than likely it is a the beginning of a respiratory infection which will need antibiotics. Stress from being rehomed can make her more susceptible. It's really a good idea to take a new puppy or rescue to your vet as soon as possible anyway to get them checked out. Heaven forbid you were to have an emergency, it's a good idea to have had your vet see her before, have all her records on file, etc. |
I also recommend a vet check. One time I went out of town and let a friend come check on my cats. He was not real familiar with cats. Anyway, I got home and one of my baby's looked like she had a cold (a Persian stuffed up ain't a pretty sight!) I took her to the vet and she had a raging infection, had to be on antibiotics. It all started with an occasional sneeze according to my friend. |
I have actually taken her to the vet about her vomiting when we first got her. It was then that she told me to double the food she was eating, as she was still too thin. I took all my records then, as well. Thanks for the info on the cold. I didn't know that they did not get colds like us. I will definitely take her to the vet now, as you suggest. Luv Franceen |

while you are in the process of getting her to the vet.... try a humidifier at night.. if she is congested or coughing it should help ease her discomfort |
Thanks for that tip, Marcerella02. She is not actually congested at all. It is just that she is sneezing occasionally, when she wasn't doing that before. Then, as I said, she is sleeping a bit more. I hope I am not panicking about nothing? Love Franceen |
I'd bring her to the vet. |
Just to be safe I would take her to the vet. I would ask the vet about different things you could do for her before you resort to antibiotics. Sometimes people want quick solutions but they aren't always the best or long term healthy solutions. |
Thanks for your replies,Yorkiekids and Mere_de_Jambo. I absolutely agree about the antibiotics been given when not really necessary and is something I am really not keen on. This is why I thought I would ask on the forum and see if anyone had any natural ways of getting her over the cold while it was still so mild. The good news is, she is so much better!!! She hasn't sneezed today and is more lively. She seems to be getting over it by herself! I am keeping a careful eye on her for ANY symptoms and will definitely take her to the vet, if she does develop more symptoms again. She is looking so well today that I decided to leave it and see. Thanks again. Luv Franceen |
