Switching Heartworm Medication? Is it OK to switch to a different heart worm medication on the whim? Ariel is on Heartgard, and the tablets are HUGE. We usually give it to her in thirds because she can't break it down herself. It's like giving her 3 pills in a day, once a month. Belle is on Interceptor and her tablet is so much smaller than Ariel's ... and she's 5x her size. |
I'm not sure the answer to that question. The best thing to do is call your vet and get their opinion. I hope you get the answer you are looking for. |
You can ask your vet about about switching. They should let you. |
Yes, I'd definitely switch. Heartguard shouldn't be cut since the medicine isn't evenly distributed throughout the pill. She will be much better off on Interceptor. BTW, I learned this from a pharmacist on another forum I belong to when this exact question came up. Unless a pill is prescored for cutting, they are not made to be divided. |

It must be OK, because I did just switch myself from Heartgard to Interceptor . (on the advise of my Vet) You give it once a month, so now instead of giving my babies the heartgard, I am giving them all the interceptor. I think I like it better. I put a little piece of cheese on the pill, and they take it like a chump! I like the fact I can give them a bath a week of two afterwards if they need it, and it still works. I think you will like it. It's a small pill, so it goes down a lot easier. I've had my dogs on Heartgard, like, forever. They were getting too use to it, and didn't want to take it anymore. The pill, they think is a treat. Dar. |
I'll talk to the Vet about switching her when we make our next visit. I agree, I like Interceptor so much better because of its size. |
It's funny, because I never thought I would switch. I swore by heartgard. But my Vet is the one that recommended I switch. Here in Florida where I am we were having alot of trouble with ticks. My dogs are mostly inside, but still you need something good just in case they do get them. Interceptor is suppose to be good for ticks. Takes care of them. And I was cutting the heartgard too, and I really know you are not suppose to. You have to make sure they get every little piece. Dar. |
