Eating Grass??

Do your babies eat grass and leaves when you're outside?? Everytime we go outside now Dash is eating grass and leaves! I do my best to get it all out of his mouth, but he does it so often I can't seem to be quick enough! Then of course 10 minutes later when we're back inside, he starts throwing up. How do you stop this problem?

I found this. Hope it helps. :)

Q: Why do dogs eat grass?

A: I surfed the Internet to gather veterinarian opinion on this question and found that dogs eat grass for a variety of reasons.

Left: [Drs. Foster & Smith, Inc.] A dog eating grass.

"It's a normal part of their diet," says Holly Frisby, DVM, of Doctors Foster & Smith, Inc. in Wisconsin. Wild canine relatives of dogs--wolves and foxes--eat all of an animal when they catch it. They end up, therefore, eating grasses and plants in the intestines of these animals. Domestic dogs, eating prepared dog food, lack this part of their diet and so they eat grass.

"They just like it!" Frisby also says. She mentions a beagle that picks raspberries faster than his owner.

Another reason: dogs may eat grass when they have an upset stomach in order to cause vomiting. "The grass will bind with the offending material. Then the grass acts as an irritant and causes the dog to vomit, bringing up the poisonous material at the same time," says Celia Feiler, DVM, of Winston Veterinary Hospital in North Carolina.

Finally, dogs may appear to eat grass, says Feiler, when they are just running the blades through their mouth to gather information. Their sense of smell and taste may act together to detect if other animals have walked through their area or urinated on the grass.

And then there's the city dwelling dog-deprived of grass. For a mere $8 a three-ounce bottle, he can eat: Barley Dog, the "Original" Barley Grass Supplement for Dogs.

Some of mine have eaten grass at various times in their lives it isn't anything to worry about - just try to make sure they don't eat long grass as when it comes out the other end they can't expell it and you may end up having to pull blades of grass covered in poo out the rear

Fred likes to lick grass and sometimes chew on it. I'm sure he eats it too but I heard that it is okay unless you put fertilizers on it.
He also likes to gnaw on twigs!

Much to my dismay Teddy loves grass too...But then he
loves twigs, leaves, bugs, oh and then there was the bird
he stalked and caught today. He is like Teddy Crockett of
the outdoors. Most days he is so busy that we have to
remind him what he is suppose to be doing while he is out
there!

Linus LOVES grass. I try to take him potty, and he lays down and eats the grass instead. I couldn't get him to eat out at the carnival today because he was too busy munching down on grass (I eventually got him too). I figure it can't be too bad if they sell pet grass at Petsmart for dogs and cats to eat.

You can try adding romaine lettuce chopped up very fine in the blender to his food. Just a small spoonful should add whatever supplement he seems to be trying to aquire on his own without the nasty side effects. You may also want to consider switching foods (slowly), he may be experiencing stomach upset from what you have him on and that could be triggering the grass eating. Good luck, Stacy

Min eat grass all the time when in the garden -and they don't throw up. I guess it's good fiber or deliciously fresh :)

Grass is Mother Nature's medicine for animals. Should they eat something that does not agree with them, then they will eat grass to throw it up.

Tucker loves grass. It doesn't make him throw up. I swear no one ever told his stomach that he is a yorkie, it's made of cast iron. He eats cat food, paper, grass, leaves. The other day I gave Rusty a piece of apple and he dropped it. Tucker came out of no where, scooped it up and ate it! He eats dry dog food, and when I put it in his bowl he scarfs it like it's steak. No one told him yorkies are picky eaters, either!

Ha - that is so much like Mare - not only will she eat anything including dust bunnies, but she will eat everything like there was no tomorrow and everybody wanted to take it from her.
So funny!

Eating Grass

Our Kodi eats and chews grass all the time. He seems to love it and it never makes him throw up.

Rika thinks she's a mini cow. The only other thing she loves to do outside more than eat grass is dig. She's never thrown up from eating grass. She just goes outside and chomps away. I find it funny.
