What do you feed your puppy? [F]Ok I am sure this has been asked a million and one times. But what food do you feed your puppy and why do you like it. Ive done research and I am still back and forth on what to do. All we have here is Wal-Mart and K-mart. What is the best food for the value. [/FONT] |
I feed Jesse California Natural. It is healthy, substantial in meat, and has a short ingredient list. It is also reasonably priced at $8.99 for 5lbs. In the nutrition section of the forum you will find a list of the best dog foods, as well as a link to a dog food analysis website. You can look up any dog food that you find in the store. You might consider ordering online. Stores like Walmart and Kmart are notorious for specializing in low-quality food. They have to keep prices low and the products are a reflection of that. |
I feed Canidae. Its the best food I can get without having to order it online. I'm going to start home cooking for Wobie once he gets a little older. That might be a good option for you to look into. I really wouldn't trust ANY brands available at Wal-Mart or K-Mart. |
Is their a feed store in your area? I found often that feed stores carry quality foods, but many ppl don't realize they can get high quality at a feed store. If I only had Walmart and Kmart I would definitely be ordering food online. Wmart and kmart foods are crap. |
I feed Merrick's. They have a good rating and I like that there are freeze dried fruits and veggies mixed in. I agree that you should order online. You probably won't be able to find good quality food at kmart or walmart. |
My number one recommendations would be a raw diet. I feed a pre-packaged raw but you can also mix your own raw. This diet requires a good amount of research but I truly believe it is the BEST diet for most dogs. There is a few threads in the health and diet forum right now about raw feeding that can point you in the right direction if you're interested. Second best to me is homecooking. To do this you also need to do your research and find good, balanced recipes. You can get these recipes from experienced homecookers or speak directly to a small animal nutritionist. I think cooking the meat loses some of the nutrients that raw has in it and therefor needs supplements, but it is a great option if raw feeding freaks you out;) ...and homecooking (if done the right way) is much better than commercial pet food My next recommendation would be a PREMIUM grain-free canned food. Some good brands off the top of my head are Nature's Variety Instinct and Innova Evo. There are also Premium canned foods out there with grain in them too if you want to keep some grains in the diet such as Nature's Variety Prairie, Innova, California Natural, Canidae, Merrick, Wellness among others... I'm not big on kibble only but if that's what you want to do go with a PREMIUM kibble. Nature's Variety Instinct, Innova Evo, and Wellness Core are all grain-free kibbles. Then there is Nature's Variety Prairie, Innova, Wellness, Canidae, Merrick, California Natural, and others that have grain in it. I highly recommend not buying your food at Walmart and K-mart. Perhaps there is a larger city not too far away that offers more stores? You can stock up between trips. Or order online. www.petfooddirect.com is a good place to do that. shipping isn't cheap, but you be constantly e-mailed discount coupons from them so that helps. Good Luck:D |

I have had the puppy on blackwood puppy food, the other dogs are all on nutro natural..they all love it..I always give the food hard, the vet said this was best for their teeth...I think the main thing is that you feel it's good for the puppy and they like it..sometimes they can be picky..My oldest dog was on kibbles and bits most of her life(a golden retriever) and she lived to be 18 |
How far in advance can you buy food? I looked at the store over here in Mexico to see what kind of dog food they carry (for when I get my puppy) and so far, I'm not impressed. The closest thing to a pet store is Walmart and that's not great either. So, can I stock up on dog food from the states to last a few months, or is that not very healthy either? Thanks. |

I feed Diamond Lamb & Rice. I got it from Tractor Supply it's 5.98 for a 6lb bag i think? all we have is walmart and kmart too... |
Size of Kibble I'm thinking about changing to Canidae All Life Styles from Royal Canin Puppy #33 but am concerned about the size of the pellets. Does anyone have any advice? Thank you :aimeeyork |
I had mine all on canidae at one time, but, with having (at the time) 3 inside and 2 outside(big dogs), it got to expensive..It was a good food though, and they all liked it..Now, I have them on nutro natural, and they all eat it really well |
I also wanted to buy Canidae to my girls, but I couldn't find a site that ships to here...:( :thumbdown |
