percentage of protein in dog food I have been researching different dog foods for abby. The newest thing is dog food seems to be non grain dog food, but these have around 42% protein in them and a bit higher amounts of fat. Are these ok for yorkies especially pregnant ones? They do say that because of the higher protein that they are not recommended for puppies.:animal36 |
It's fine as long as your dog doesn't have medical issues (like liver disease) in which a high-protein diet is not recommended. These premium grain-free foods have very high quality sources of protein. Also, dogs are carnivores and were created to eat high protein diets. If you're sticking with commercial food, I recommend canned over kibble though since canned has moisture in it that I think is important. |
I was planning on doing a combination of the two. I usually add canned in the morning and just dry in the evening. That way she gets some chewing. I was looking into natures variety raw instincts of the many foods that I let her try this one she seemed to like the best. Do you know anything about it? Thanks for any information. |

Thanks for all the info. Deb |
The internal med specialist we saw last week said great things about Wellness. if you go to Wellnessdogfood.com you can find all of their products and info. I wanted to go with the super 5 mix (red bag) but he suggested high quality protein and LOW fat. So we choose Wellness weight management b/c it was the best fit compared to Royal canin duck and potato. I do not care for the ingredients in the pres foods. WE have issues so we have to follow a strict diet. (urinary tract infections, protein loss in urine. and high blood pressure) they make wellness snacks that my girls are going crazy for. i also feed Innova Senior diet and it is lowered in fat and sodium. another site to read is dogfoodanalysis.com. I have heard that 30-40% protein is really high for our little girls. you really only need 20% or a little higher. you would be inmpressed if you check out wellness. I asked the internal med specialist about the raw and he would not support it at all. I was really wanting to try the raw but he would not advise. I even said that so many YT talk were feeding the raw and he just gave me a bad look on his face. I am not one to preach what anyone should feed. I have learned so much from my YT friends so I would never want that to be taken that way. I have been spending the last 4 months researching food and I think that Canidae and Wellness are the best for dry foods. The innova senior canned my dogs also will die for. we use it for treats and to give meds. |

The Wellness site teaches you A LOT about diet, feeding, and what goes into pet food. You will find it very useful in finding a good food whatever you decide to go with. It talks about sodium, fat, protein in the nutrition section of there website. very good info to see. highly recommend. :-) |
I feed NV kibble or it is out all the time,I really only have one who eats it but they all really like.(they have all tried it) I used to feed the all organic and then switched to this and they like it just the same .Not to expensive I buy the big bags 22.00. They different varieties also we are on the chicken now. |
