Huge scare! I wolk up this morning and everything was fine, we went about doing our regular routine, Kiko had his breakfast we went outside for a little walk. It was just after lunch time and was finishing the last stiches on the little bed I made for him. I get up to go to the kitchen and my little tail didn't follow me for the first time. He stayed laying down, I wasn't alarmed right away but I found it wierd since he always follows me around the house and I was getting used to it. I turned and called to him and he didn't move so I went to him talking to him as I picked him up, even though he was looking at me, he was very limp. I tried to put him down in a sitting position and he just fell over. I called my husband and when he took him into his arms Kiko's head was drooping!! I freaked out!! It sounded just like the post "Riley had vaccines now has head droop" posted by dianebezdek. What was worse it seemed like he was fading! It's hard to explain but it seemed like he wasn't with us or was fighting to be with us. I was hysterical, the vet I had been to wasn't open today and all the yellowpage listings I called were closed too. Then he started to vomit yellow goo and then sieze! I went nuts crying and my husband panicked. I went to my computer praying to find a vet's office that was open to help us. I went throught the yahoo listings called about seven numbers and kept getting an answering maching until finally I dialed a number and they said they were open and only ten minutes away! We jumped in the car and were on our way there when Kiko who already looked like he was starring into space started to make a paddling motion with his feet he had done it twice by the time we got to the office. As soon as I got there I handed him to the vet's assistant who turned from a welcoming smile to serious concerned look and took him away. It was horrible, my baby was gone and I didn't know what the heck was going on or if he was going to live. Anyway they were wonderful and the vet told me he was having a hypoglycemic attack. They took very good care of him especially Phil the assistant. We are soooooooo happy that he is now doing much better. The vet gave me some prescribed diet wet food (he said to worry about dry food when he's better) and nutri-cal. I am soo glad we found this vet and that he was open and that it didn't happen tomorrow because everything will be closed tomorrow! I will continue to go to this vet's office they were super nice especially Phil. I hope this thread helps someone in the future if there puppy starts to show the same symptoms. |
Oh my heart just stopped reading your story about Kiko. What a relief that everything turned out ok. Thank goodness you found a vet close by who could give him such great care. Many hugs to Kiko. |
thank god thank god kiko is okay it was a very upseting reading this post my thoughts are with you. Just a tip for yorkie talkers always know exactly what vets are on and what emergency vets are open 24 hours Ive been caught a few times. :) dianne :) |
I am glad Kiko is doing better. That sounds terribly scary. Its a good thing you found a vet so close open. |
OMG what a relief you found a vet that was open. Im glad Kiko is feeling better....and you too. |
Omgdns i would have freaked out too ... good to hear you found a vet and that your baby is doing better. :) |
GOOD thing you are that good a mom and noticed him not with you and picked him up !! What a big scare for all of you and I'm SO GLAD he's ok - When we first got Chanel we scoped out ALL The vets in the area - it's good to have a list but then panic sets in and man - you go blank with panis - GOOD for you that he's ok - What a scare ...keep that nutracal going and I'm sure he'll be fine - but I'd be hysterical too - BIG Hugs to little Kiko ! |
Thank you all for your kind words and I learned my lesson, the vet gave me two numbers of offices that wil be open tomorrow just incase. You are right Dianne and Villette it's good advice to yorkie parents to have emergency numbers ready ahead of time! |
That same thing happened to my baby Mia and luckily the breeder warned me about hypoglacima and gave me nutri cal. I too panicked but hurried and gave her the nutri cal and she came out of it. It is the most scarry thing! Thank God your baby is fine now, sometimes they are not as lucky as the two of us are. :aimeeyork |
I'm very glad your baby is better. I keep this saved on my desktop and thought I'd share it with you: Hypoglycemia, low blood sugar, is a disorder that occurs mainly in small breed puppies between six and twelve weeks of age. It is often precipitated by stress and can occur without warning (if the puppy is susceptible). It might appear after the puppy misses a meal, chills, becomes exhausted from playing, or has a digestive upset. These upsets place an added strain on it's energy reserves and bring on the symptoms. Hypoglycemia is a real threat to these tiny puppies, watch for your puppy to become tired or droopy. The first signs are those of listlessness and depression. They are followed by muscular weakness, tremors, and later convulsions, coma and even death. The puppy may appear depressed or may be weak, wobbly and jerky, or the puppy may be found in a coma. If your puppy has any symptoms of hypoglycemia you must act fast. If the puppy is awake, give it Nutrical, or Karo syrup by mouth. You should see signs of improvement in thirty minutes. If no improvement, then call your veterinarian. If the puppy is unconscious it should be taken to the veterinarian at once. Prevent Hypoglycemia from happening by allowing only twenty minutes of play at a time, followed by rest or sleep. Do not allow the puppy to overtire at first. Supervise closely with children to make sure puppy is getting enough rest. Keep puppy warm, don't let it become chilled. Your Yorkie puppy is a house dog and should not be living outdoors. Prevent attacks by feeding a high quality kibble diet. We use and recommend Eukanuba puppy food. See that puppy eats at least every six to eight hours. More often if he is very small. Keep dry food and water available at all times. You can give 1/2 teaspoon of Nutrical or syrup morning and night for the first couple of days to help prevent the low blood sugar that can come with the excitement and stress of going to a new home. http://www.fantasyyorkies.com/Hypoglycemia.html |
Oh my goodness! I know you were frightened to no end... I'm so glad she is doing better... Keep the nutrical going... I'm thinking of you... |
:D I am soooooo glad he is better. Keep us posted. Was it his blood sugar? Joy, Nikki and Baby Chloe :animal-sm :aimeeyork |
I am sorry to hear about your furbaby. I would have been scared out of my mind. Thank goodness there was a vet open and who was nice and helpful. But....I am glad he's doing better. Keep us posted on his progress. |
Nutrical is the first thing I recommend to all yorkie owners. You are very lucky to have your baby still here with you. It doesn't take long at all once their sugar level starts to drop. Glad that your baby is okay!!! |
do you give your baby Nutrical everyday when you first bring them home? Is it like a half cc once a day, or just when you feel they need it? I also heard that you can get something that is close to Mothers Milk to add to their dry food. Heard of that? I will be getting baby Chloe very soon and I quess my breeder will tell me everything I need to know( also my Vet) but its so good to be able to get other opinions. Thanks, Joy, Nikki and Baby C :animal-sm :aimeeyork hloe |
thank god hes ok ! |
Sick puppy OMG, so glad everything turned out alright. Had your puppy not eaten much this morning? |
I am so thankful that Kiko will be OK! Our vet had us give Toto NutriCal until she was over a year old. It's loaded with vitamins & nutrients and she was such a picky eater. |
Thank you everyone for caring and for the great information, I don't know what exactly brought the attack on as I thought he was eating enough (about 4 tbls a day) at least I thought it was enough. It may have been the walk because his appetite seemed ok before hand. Looking at yorkieusa's post I'm thinking maybe it was the bath I gave him after the walk we had outside. He was soggy from the dew on the grass and had a chill so I bathed him in warm water and dried him in his towel and brushed him...I'm thinking it may have been the chill from the dewy grass. After this I think eveyone with a tiny baby yorkie should have a 24 hour emergency vet phone number and nutri-cal in their medicine cabinet. It's a wonderful supplement. This evening even though he is still resting his eyes are bright and cheery and ihe is back to his sweet self again thank God! |
Oh and yea he is picky when he eats so I have to monitor what he eats and sometimes play with him with the food to get him to eat it, but he was eating and drinking well. But I'm keeping him on the wet food the vet gave me for sometime because he chows it down like nobody's business and it makes me feel good in the pit of my stomach to see him eat like that without me coaxing him. Besides I'd rather have a healthy puppy that I have to keep an eye on his teeth than one that has great teeth and is sickly. When he's older I'll try dry. I should have known..he came from such a rough environment and has just got over the limp in his leg. I feel a bit guilty, that was stress I overlooked. I should have been more prepared. I just thought that since he was in a better place now with so much love that that would have made all that go away but thinking back on it he has nightmares when he sleeps and sometimes I have to wake him gently out of them. I should have realized and bought him a supplement. I know better now. |
I am glad he is doing better. My pup Jewels was only 12 ounces when we broght her home and I worried about hypoglycemia, I would continue to keep your eye on him because for some reason some yorkies are prone to hypoglycemia where others have no problem with it. I never had any problems with it with either one of my dogs. |

What is nutri-cal Hi I am a new yorkie mommy and I have read about hypoglycemia but not about giving nutri-cal. What is nutri-cal and where can I get it? It sounds like something I would should have on hand. Also, I read a post that said it happens to pups six to twelve weeks old, is that right, or is it something that can happen at any time during their whole life? Our little one has been sick off and on in the past so now when anything is out of sync I worry. My husband says I have become a worry wart. Our baby is doing well right, has been for a few months, but to think of anything else going wrong just depresses me. If someone can please let me know about the above questions I would appreciate it. I want to be a prepared and knowledgeable mother. Also I love this site, I have learned so much already. I am so glad that this exists. Have a great day! Sara |
OMG!! I am SO glad that Kiko is better!! The poor baby! I know how scarey that can be because my Maltese Codie has a hypoglycemia attack when he was a pup and it scared the life out of me and my husband!! What I do is give my babies 1 inch of Nutrical 3 times a day, plus on extra hot days, I give them some karo syrup just to be safe. I also leave the air conditioner on during the day while I am at work so that they don't get sick from the heat. Good luck w/ your baby Kiko!! |
Maybe someone with more experience can tell you if hypoglycemia attacks can still happen after their first year. I do know that you can get Nutri-cal at the vet's office and some pet supply stores. It comes in a long thin white and light blue box and inside is a tube of browns sweet syrupish looking substance. It kinda has the texure of tooth paste and if it gets hot it'll get kinda runny. I squeaze a bit on my finger on place it at the roof of his mouth so he can lick it down. At the vet's office my nutri-cal tub cost me 7 bucks. I hope this helps. :D |
Thanks. That does help. I'm so glad that Kiko is ok. I know that I would have probably freaked out myself. I am definitely putting that on my list of things to do-get some nutri-cal. Thanks again! |
I am so glad that Kiko is okay!!! About half down the story I thought it was going to turn out bad, but I am glad that it did not...I am happy that you were able to find a vet that was open, I know how hard it can be... This past Christmas we were out of town and Magic had accidently got into some chocolate that was in one of our stockings, we called ever vet we could but could not find one that was open (it was late in the evening)...we were scared to death and then all of sudden we talked to a vet who came up to the office and took care of my baby...I will always be thankful to that vet and all the staff, they truly did save my baby's life... We always have to be careful and make sure we know of vets that are open at all times, you never know when a emergency will occur...we have a 24hr clinic near us and we have used it on a number of occassions... I will Kiko in my prayers as he continues to get better.... |
