Sophie is now on prescription food. She is eating it right now. Thank the Lord. I was so afraid she would not eat it. She had a really bad bout with the itchies and another ear infection. So she had to have an allergy shot. The vet said that it was really looking like she was allergic to her food and that if she started itching again in two weeks he wanted to change her food. So that is where we are now. He put her on potato and venison and to my surprise she ate it. YAY!!!!! She is so picky I was worried to death. I was wondering if anyone else has a baby on Prescription and how they have done on it? Thanks |
Why did your vet go right to prescription? There are tons of options for itchy dogs before you have to go with Science Diet. Is she on canned or dry? |
We're not on prescription food, but I hope your baby is feeling well soon. |
We aren't either on prescription food. But if the vet prescribe for her is working and she is eating the food, that's is all matter:aimeeyork  |
Natural Balance make both a Duck formula and Venison formula. Jazzie has allergies really bad to where they wanted to start her on allergies shots but I tried NB the Duck & Pototo foumla and she hardly ever gets the itchies any more. I know prescription foods are very expensive, this might be a good alternative for you and Sophie. All three of my girls gobble it up! |
I really like my vet and I trust his judgement. I think his big concern is the ear infections. I get a 8lb bag for $20 dollars and a can for like $2. How much is the natural balance and where can you buy it? |
I agree. Ear infections/scratching can be serious. Ellie was on Royal Canin for liver compromised dogs. It had corn in it and she scratched to the point of making her ears bleed. We took her off of that and I did not want to go with Science Diet L/D. I gave the vet permission to atleast see if there was corn in the L/D and said I would consider it. Thank God there is corn in it so we couldn't use it.:) The only real choice at the time was to homecook or use vegetarian food. Ellie is fine now as long as she doesn't eat anything with corn at all. What food was she on before that made her itch? Maybe you and your vet could try to find the exact allergen or she will be stuck on Science Diet forever. |

I only give dry food. They also have biscuts with the same formula for small breeds too. |

My vet put my chihuahua on prescription diet a few years ago, I didn't like the science diet he put her on so I researched myself and now feed her Natural Balance potato duck, Since it is for all life stages I feed it to all of my dogs including the new puppy. They all love it, I buy it in the 30lb bags for about $42 since I have 4 dogs. I seen on their website they have come out with a new smaller kibble in this flavor, I want to get it next, although the original size kibble is fine too. They also have treats and canned food. Ever since my chi started on it she has been great, I love the food, highly recommend it. |
I am feeding her a teaspoon of wet mixed in with half a cup of dry in the morning and then again in the evening. The closest petco is 2 hours away from me. I live in a small town. We don't even have a pet store. I think I will keep her on this and see if the itchies stop and if they do I may try and see what I can do. Thanks for all your advice it is much appreciated. |
Science Diet Bella has been on Science Diet z/d for about 5 weeks. Her scratching is not any better, and quite frankly she seem hungry all the time. I also think the kibble is to BIG for our little dogs. I am going to try a product called "Dynavite". Has any one heard of it? |
