My last Raw question........ Hopefully OK would it be dangerous to my dogs if I feed chicken, lamb, turkey, beef and eggs as the only protiens. I just don't think I can find more exciting meats and I don't want to do this half way. Walmart is pretty much my only store available. And what do you feel about Vegetables? It seems to be debated among Raw feeders and I'd like to have some real world experiences. |
I think those proteins are fine. You are still giving a good variety there. If you happen to ever come across other protein sources great, but the ones you listed are fine in themselves. I usually give Lacy rabbit and venison but she's gotten some chicken, turkey, and lamb recently too. So far as veggies - dogs don't really need them but they don't necessarily hurt either. I feed Lacy pre-made and it has about 5% fruits and veggies in there. Every fruit and veggie was put in there for a particular reason according to Nature's Variety (blueberries & cranberries for antioxidants and urinary health, pumpkin seeds for fiber and vitamins, etc). I like to stay away from grains of course, but I don't see anything wrong with a small amount of fruits and veggies. I read on one site that about 5% of your dog's diet could be treats so I guess our 5% is the fruits and veggies in her food. |

No, that sounds pretty good. I also gave mine pork neck bones. I did some vegetables, but not tons. I made a patty from Ian Billinghurst's book that had blended vegetables, liver, beef heart, yogurt, eggs with shells, etc. in it. I gave this to them for one meal a day and then a totally meat and bone meal for the other meal/meals. |
There are some good raw feeding groups in yahoo groups. Some are local, some are national. One of them I belonged to was called "K9Nutrition" it was really good for all kinds of raw feeding. A good place to get supplements and stuff for specific ailments/allergies is http://b-naturals.com/ . It is owned by Lew Olsen (a female) who knows a lot about canine nutrition. She also is available to answer questions. She is on the K9Nutrition group and also you can email her through her website. My westie had lots of allergies and yeast. She has stuff to help it. Good luck! Let us know what you end up doing and what you find out. |

It tends to be within the BARF vs Prey Model debate. I'm basically a prey model feeder as I believe that prey model is tailored to the needs of a carnivore, then there is the odd modification that suits my dogs. At the end of the day though, the most important thing is to find a way of feeding raw that suits both you and your dogs. http://www.rawmeatybones.com/petowne...whynotbarf.pdf http://rawfed.com/myths/ |
