which bones to give? Hi! Gypsy is 5.5 months old, and she has some double teeth, and apparently, that is causing her some bad breath. it isn't really bad, but it smells like saliva. So I'm assuming the retained teeth are causing it. I want to wait to see if the teeth fall on their own, but in the meantime I'm considering giving her some bones. I have tried the rawhide, but for some reason she doesn;t want to chew them for too long, it seems she has pain in her mouth. So I'm tinking to tempt her with some bones, so hopefully she loses some teeth that way. Can somebody recommend what kind of bones are good to give them? I supponse cow leg bones? do they need to be boiled first, o raw? thanks! |
I cannot help you, but I have one that had two double teeth, and one fell out, the other stayed..keep us updated as I would like to know if there is a better way then putting them under to have one tooth pulled out..Hate to put them under for one tooth, if it does not be needed...  |
You'll want to feed raw bones as cooked bones can splinter. You can freeze the bones and then thaw them out to feed..freezing will kill bacteria. I'm not sure what the best bones are for recreational chewing..I know some other members can help here. I've given raw chicken necks before though - Lacy took about 30-45 minutes to eat one |
You can give raw meaty bones such as those from any poultry, lamb or rabbit. The emphasis is on them being raw and meaty. I would advise making sure you do not feed her any kibble within at least 5 hours after eating the rmb to allow it to digest on its own. Bones such as beef bones and the leg bones of large animals are classed as recreational bones, intended to be chewed but not eaten. However I would not advise them as they have the potential to break teeth due to how dense they are. |
As Lara said, don't give your doggie anything too big as they can break their teeth. Mum's Jack Russell broke one of her teeth on a dense bone (she dug it up out of the backyard, my long deceased German Shepherd buried it at least 10 years before) and it has caused nothing but problems. I've been giving Suzy brisket bones from the butcher for the past month or so and she hasn't had any problems with them, she's 5 months old next week. Just be sure to get the butcher to cut them long and skinny so there's no chance of her swallowing them. Failing that, chicken necks are a good option but Suzy eats them a little too quickly for my liking so I cut them up into chunks for her and she chews them like that. |
I'd use the raw bones to help get those teeth out. Also, playing tug of war helps them come out. |
