I couldn't find my answer anywhere.....Help me! I just brought my yorkie home yesterday and he is 12 weeks old. I was told to mix hiser dry food and wet food together because i didn't want to put him on different food that night so my breeder gave me some to take home. He seems to be eating it, but very little. However, he is not drinking. I don't know how to get him to drink his water. Any help would be great! Thank you! |
Are you thinking he may actually be dehydrated? If so, check his gums - they should be pink, not pale. Puppies, if healthy, are pretty good about keeping up on their water naturally. However, when you first get them home - they will be more stressed in the new environment. You could dab your fingers in the water, and put to his lips, you could add a bit of karo syrup or pedialyte to his water to make it taste good - and, worst case, you could give water w/ a syringe in his mouth. He isn't shaky or anything, right? Oh - just thought of something - when you're mixing dry food w/ canned - add extra water to the mix, that will get extra water in his system too. What is "Hiser" dog food, never heard of it... Oh, and WELCOME to YT! :D |
Welcome to YT . If you mix wet and dry food , its normal that he won't drink very much . The little one is in his adaptation in his new home so he is more anxious to explore his new home . What's his name . Congratulations . |
Welcome to yt:) Congrats:) |
Hi & :welcome4: !! I got my Rowdy & switched his food to canidae as soon as i got him he was 8 weeks old. I would put about 1/4 a cup of food in a dish with twice as much hot water to soften it by the time it was cool it was ready for him to eat. They get lots of water that way & don't seem to drink as much. Bella i had the breeder start her out with the canidae because she feed something else. I have never had any problems with either of my furbabies.:p |
Thank you so much for the help I will give that a try. His gums are nice and pink. However, my next question is, he doesn't seem to be going to the bathroom. I fed him at 7 this morning and it is now 9 and he hasn't done to the restroom. And his name is Brady! |
canned food has a lot of moisture in it so they get a lot of their water from their food and won't need to drink as much |

Welcome to YT. The reason he may not be drinking are new environment, and moisture in wet food. |
Welcome to you and Brady! What a great name. |
:wavey: Welcome to YT! Brady - what a darling name (also the name of a college boyfriend of mine  ) Can't wait to see pictures of the little sweetie |
Hi welcome to yt, hope your puppy is doing much better:aimeeyork |
My puppy did the same thing for the first few days when we got him home. The vet said it is quite normal not to drink very much due to stress and also because the moist food has a lot of water in it too. Of course I still worried and got a small syringe, and he drank water from that. The vet also said that sometimes they will notice that the water tastes different in their new home and it will take awhile to get used to. As far as going to the bathroom, mine did the same thing too. A lot of people told me that they will go within 30 mins. of eating or drinking, but Sully routintely only goes after a nap. I don't think he's gone close after eating or drinking since we got him. |
welcome to YT Brady! |
Well I just wanted to update everyone :) I guess I am spoiling him because I sat down next to him and praised him everytime he took a bite and helped hand feed him. Then with the drinking I let him lick out of a straw. It might be bad tog et him used to, but if that is what it takes....then so be it! I was so proud of him! I let him sleep in my bed and I took him out to potty right before I went to bed and he went. Well this morning he barked and sniffed and stood at the edge of the bed (thank goodness he didn't jump off) and I rushed him outside and he peed outside. I was so proud of him! I wish I could give him treats...can I? I don't know what to give him. Im so afraid of something making him sick. Any suggestions? Thank you for all the advice. He is also being a lot more active, we played fetch with his toy this morning for about an hour. I told him to go get his toy and he went straight to it. :D :p  :aimeeyork |
